Xbox(OG) Vs PS2
Xbox(OG) Vs PS2
Hi
I have never really been a huge gaming fan until I was given a N64 last week. I'm now looking to pick up a PS2 or Xbox. I'm leaning more towards the Xbox at the moment because the system and games are cheaper although there seems to be a lot more available for the PS2 and from what I understand you can play PS1 games. If it helps the games I have most enjoyed are Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Mario Kart 64, Perfect Dark and Super Smash Bros. Any help would be most appreciated.

I can't comment on which has the better gaming library since I'm more a Nintendo expert. But I can tell you that I would pick up an XBOX (I have two that I picked up for $20 total), mod it and put a large IDE drive in and install XBMC (Xbox Media Center). I'm running some of my games off the hard disk and downloaded an xbox Emulator pack from bitgamer.com. The amount of stuff you can do with XBMC is amazing.

I say get the PS2. I'm not bashing that big ugly box(i have a 360 not a PS3 so not a fanboy) but the Library for the PS2 is insane. SO much to choose from and the games are not really that expensive. The PS2 has probably the one best library of games, up there with Super Nintendo. My Money is on the PS2. XboX only really had Halo 2(which I hated) so no real reason to own it IMHO(and the controller was horrible). Now if we talking PS3 and X360, that's a different story

PS2 for sure. It has the biggest library for any console while the Xbox is kind of limited.

it really is a matter of taste and what you are looking for, nothing can touch the PS2 in terms of game library size and quality. However how many games do you plan on getting and what type of games do you favor. The Original X-Box does have some cool exclusives, although nowhere near what the PS2 can offer. Some of my favorite games for X-Box are Buffy the Vampire Slayer (The original X-Box exclusive game, not the multiplatform sequel) Steel Battalion, Halo 1 & 2, Forza Motorsport, Project Gotham Racing and the Spilnter Cell Series. For the moment you can pick up most X-Box games pretty cheap, and you could put together a large collection of quality games quickly, compared to the PS2 games.
If you like RPG's however, PS2 is the place to go...plus games are still being made for it today.
You could always go Dreamcast and have a great affordable system with great graphics and a great library of games, with a majority of the titles being very affordable.

Xbox - pro's
Large Library and cheap prices.
No need for memory cards, which can get expensive with the PS2.
Improved Graphics.
Con's
Ugly looking system.
The controller is bulky.
Limited Library compared to the PS2

As others have said, I would go for the PS2 because of the massive library of great games. The memory card thing is not a big deal--I've had one memory card for the past 7 years and the only thing I've ever had to erase on it was the massive Madden Franchise file (but I imagine you won't be playing any Madden over in England...) If you can get your XBOX modded, though, the emulator functions are pretty darn cool.

If you want to get another console, get a Gamecube. If you like OOT, you will love Wind Waker and Twilight Princess. Super Smash Bros Melee is the sequel to SSB64 and is pretty much superior in every way. Mario Kart Double Dash is pretty good too (though not as good as MK64). Really, if you are looking to upgrade from a N64, your best bet is to get a Cube. You can pick them up from Gamestation for £15 and the games rarely cost over £5.

Re: Xbox(OG) Vs PS2
I can't speak on the PS2. I'm contemplating on one myself. But I bought my XBox in 2003 and I'm still playing it. So I would have to be bias and suggest teh XBox. The library isn't as big as the PS2, but there are a ton of high-quality games out there for cheap. It will be money well spent.

Just buy all the systems from the 128 bit era, combined they will still be much cheaper then a PS3...lol
