Sewer Shark

Post by Curlypaul »

Well my first proper taste of an FMV game for my new MegaCD, in the form of Shark Shark arrived yesterday in all its oversized box glory. Played it for about an hour and I thought it was pretty cool, depsite what most of the rest of the internet thinks. The FMV was is very grainy but the game window is bigger than I expected and the music is very cool as are the cheesy characters and ott acting.

I also actually like the fast paced shooting as well - not the greatest rail shooter I ever played (PD Orta) but you do have to be damn quick which provides a good challenge.

The most irritating thing so far is that Ghost insists on spitting out verbal abuse at the same that Catfish is telling me which tunnels I need to head down.

I love the smell of the sewers in the morning

You're preaching to the choir here. I loved FMV games as an ignorant 14 year old. With my lack of internet info, it took me forever to figure out how to even follow those turns that Ghost spits out.

My personal favorite FMV game was Double Switch. Its basically a way better version of Night Trap (get the CD 32x version of that one). Tomcat Alley is cool, Corpse Killer is a pretty neat on rails shooter (might be your thing if you like on rails), or anything by Digital Pictures.

I think there came a point in my adolescence where I knew FMV sucked, but I just kept playing it. Haha.

FMV sucks bigtime, but I can't get enough of em! All I need is a proper CRT TV, and a lightgun. F'n LCD's and their inability to support lightguns.

99 cents! I paid £6.70 and that was pretty good compared to the recent ebay sales. Still I'm happy with my purchase. Ground Zero Texas arrived today and I was chuffed to find that the hinges are still intact

Actually, get the 3DO version. It has the largest resolution of all the Night Trap versions (which in those games translated to a larger viewing window).

Also, though I haven't played it in... long enough to make me feel old, Double Switch just didn't seem quite as hammy and fun as Night Trap. Sure, it had Corey Haim, but unfortunately it had Corey Haim. Worth playing for any Deborah Harry or R. Lee Ermey fans, though.

Some FMV games ARE good, though. No one should let the Sega CD releases besmirch the good acronym of FMV. Too many people confuse FMV with Interactive Movies (ie. most the games mentioned here). Gabriel Knight, Wing Commander III (again a fine 3DO release), 7th Guest (partial FMV), etc., are all considered FMV games - just not Interactive Movies.
