AnimeNewbie.com - racket's future project

Post by racketboy »

Well, I just registered my second domain name.
I'm not sure how involved the project will be, but I just thought of the name and concept today and figured, I'd play around with the idea.
I basically want to make a small site to help out people (like me) that are getting started in Anime, but don't know what to start with or expand from a few of "the essentials"

What are your thoughts?

BTW, I don't plan on having it take away from racketboy.com much at all, so don't worry.

Eh, haven't found a decent anime in half a decade. Now is the worst time to get into the stuff. Stick with the shows from the 80's and early 90's.

Thanks for the tip.
Yeah, like my gaming, I plan on starting with the classics.

Would you (or anybody else) be interested in helping me piece together some stuff?
I want to keep it pretty casual but organized.

I think the only newer ones I've seen that I've like were Samurai Champloo (which I thought was kinda slow) and Full Metal Panic fumoffu (which I thought was awesome)

My friend forced me to sit through Champloo, and 2 episodes into it I still don't see what's so special. Cowboy Bebop was much better, right from the very first ep.

Is there anyone actively into this stuff anymore? If so, can someone recommend a show I'd actually like? I am so thirsty for MASCULINE anime. Something like Fist of the North Star, please. I want exploding heads and ridiculous muscles, with the motivational montage rock song and everything. No big eyed cutesy shit.

Ok, I'm glad I'm not the only one who was underwhelmed by SC. I loved Cowboy Bebop and everyone recommended SC, so I tried it.
I don't mind the cutesy stuff as long as its funny and has a decent story. On the other side, I only like the "masculine" stuff if it has god characters and a story to make it worthwhile. I need more than eye-candy.

Fist of the North Star has a story.

Then again, you're talking to someone who still likes DragonBall (japanese version, anyway), so what would I know?

I could help you lots. First though you gotta remember that everyone has different tastes, so maybe we could relate certain american shows to animes. Like if you liked the Kung-fu TV series you'd like Samurai Champloo. J/k, but I think things like that may be easier for people confused on where to start out. It's obviously not going to be easy, but if everyone helps out, you could make something great!

So far I've liked (you said one of them, but its for everyone):

Samurai Champloo
loved this show. nice action and some cool fights. Have yet to listen to it in surround, but if I do I hope it kindof adds to the experiance. One of three animes I prefer the english dub. I'm weird like that.

Cromartie High School
Hilarious, IMO. It's about a kinda dorky A student who gets transfered into the worst public school in tokyo and eventually befriends most of them. It's funny in a stupidity kindof way (in that all of the characters are dumb as hell) but don't mistake it for a Jackass kindof stupidity. More like a Jim Gaffigan. Oh, and I prefer the english dub on this as well. pretty good.

DNA^2 (squared for those not into calculator lingo)
A nerdy dude who throws up at the site of a naked woman accidently becomes the ultimate playboy when the time agent trying to stop him from becoming it turns him into it. The only thing is he can only be the playboy for a certain amount of time. also hilarious.

Neon Genesis Evangelion
A too smart for it's own good kindof anime. The giant robot fights are pretty cool tho, and the science, while highly innacurate, it's still kindof interesting. I'd reccomend watching the movies instead of the last two episodes. They are kindof boring and prolly the worst episodes. They re-telecines the whole series so it looks really nice, btw.

Yakitate Japan!!
Fan sub only. Hasn't been released yet in america. Really entertaing show about bread bakers. I thought it sounded retarded when I first heard about it, but it is really cool. Plus it's free, so there's no reason not to try it!

Rurouni kenshin
Historically accurate (well, for the most part) samurai anime. Really cool villians, similar in style to the ones in metal gear solid, just not as crazy in the head. The story is interesting as well, tho the OVAs are so so. Samurai X is entertaining, but I didn't like the one that where he married kaoru, kindof boring.

Great Teacher Onizuka
Ex gang leader wants to become a teacher. That and his inital perversions are all you need to know to understand how funny and good this is.

Cowboy Bebop
Mozgus mentioned this. Really good stuff. Space bounty hunters going around the galaxy trying to make some dough. Never seen it through all the way, but love what I have seen.

Magical Nurse Komugi
Sad to say it, but I loved this. Was hilarious! A girl turns into a witch or something, but she's flat chested, so everyone makes fun of her, cuz they are big busted. This includes her coworking cosplayer/modeling peeps and her rival anti nurse person.

Zero no tsukaima
A witch who can't do jack but make things explode summons a person from earth as her minion animal dude. It's just funny how they interact. Also not available in america, so fandub's a must.

That's all I can say for now, but you should look into manga as well. Many of them are better than their anime counterparts, since they may have originally been a manga, like dragonball. Hilarious manga, while the anime is really made for children, tho mebe the version I saw was just heavily edited. I like manga quite a bit better, with stuff like naruto being great in comic form.

Also, i'd like to note I like more american cartoons than japanese ones, so don't think I'm so anime freak.

I liked the OVAs. Hated the series. All that "ORORORORO 0_O" bullshit. God, shoot me.
