good spot for xbox 360 ventilation? heres a pic

Post by omer »

elite falcon model.

the 360 used to face the front but the back of the tv stand has a wall and i noticed it gets realllly hot back behind the 360 and between the tv stand wall when the 360 is running. so i rotated the 360 to the side so that the harddrive faces out to the front and that the back of the 360 ventilates to the left open side of the tv stand like in the picture below.

i know it doesnt matter how well the 360 is ventilated because we all know the flaw in the design of the motherboard which is the cause of the RRoD for the xenon, zephyr, falcon 360 models

But i dont want my 360 heating itself up in a spot with bad ventilation so my question is: according to the picture , is my 360 sitting in a good spot for ventilation? i paid $400 for this shit and i dont want it dying even if it has a warranty. if someone who knows better can educate me on how the ventilation system works , please post ;p

p.s. the saturn is the ultimate console to have.

I would face the DVD drive forward for convenience. I dont think it would make much a difference as it looks like your TV stand is open on the side, it should get plenty of air circulation.

I wouldnt overthink it. If its gonna die, its gonna die. (sad that people have to worry like this with the 360's)

I think that you need more air flow than that....possibly on top where your switcher is. Or you could buy a jasper and it wouldn't matter.

No, I think it should at least be kept 6 inches away from anything to be safe but then again my first 360 was basically left miles away from anything by itself and it still red ringed(but that was after the NXE update, related? I dunno)

I think its not a bad spot, but if you want to face it forwards thats fine as well. The only air cooling that the 360 really provides is the two fans, placed side by side, on the back part of the system. The rest of the system isnt completely air tight, so you will get some extra ventillation, but not much since the fans are directed to the cpu/gpu by a plastic air duct.

And if you ever see an intercooler, run far, far away!!

Edit: I've been wanting to mod my saturn for some time, but since it's my only one I'm afraid to break it. I have done modding before, but how easy is it? Sorry for going off topic.

its ot ideal but works. I need to find out if I have a falcon or jasper...mine sits atop the tv on a plastic stand attached to the tv but it still can run warm and loud nothing like my old unit though (before it died F**ker was spewing heat like a cheap blow dryer!)

I'd put it on top, vertical a couple of inches away from the TV. This where I've always kept mine (version 1 had since launch with NXE) and i've never had any problems with my 360.

Putting it in such a confined space is just asking for trouble.

It's VERY easy to Mod a Saturn if you have a Model 2 (just like mine in the picture above). Racketboy has excellent guides for mod'ing a Saturn.

No problem, it just makes me wonder when people say their xbox has red ringed, I assume it's from putting it in a cupboard or on a shelf. Those media centres have lots of nooks and crannies and some consoles are fine when put into small spaces because they don't generate a lot of heat. The 360 is the first console that really does need a lot of ventilation and a lot of space around it to keep it cool. You wouldn't dream of putting a performance PC (and they usually have lots of cooling fans and lots of space in the case) in a tiny space that only has a couple of inches to spare on each side, why would you do it to a 360 which generates just as much heat if not more but doesn't benefit from a huge case and lots of space for fans?
