What are your favorite SNES shmups?
I like Cybernator (a sweet mech shooter) and Cotton
The Best SNES Shooters
Pop'n Twinbee -- dunno what it is, but I love the Twinbee games. The gameplay has been formulaic from one version to the next, beginning with the NES -- but it was the SNES which allowed the cutesy cotton-candy flavored anime to come to life. And, I really like shooting the bells with their attributes changing as I do so.
Super R-Type was actually pretty fun. A nice mixup of levels from R-Types 1 and 2 + a little extra. I also really enjoy Area 88/U.N. Squadron. It handles leveling up better than Super E.D.F. and I really enjoy managing money to buy new planes and special weapons. That's a game type that needs to be revisited on a console. I second Racketboy's nomination of Cybernator.

I can't recall the name right now (i'll check later) but there was one where you piloted a futuristic jet (aren't they all?) but when you had 2 players, there was a button that allowed you to link the ships together and while one played normally, the secondary player now controlled a 360 degree turret. Unfortunately the game itself sucked. The enemies were the exact same for about 10 minutes (not kidding) and ended up being way too long for such little variation. It was a great concept that was wasted by crappy game planning among other things
otherwise r-type is probably my fave
