2d Freeplay and GGPO

Post by vlame »

Which do you prefer?

http://2dfighter.com/ - more games, online replays, bad hosting set-up (uses mame32 i think)

http://ggpo.net/ - Small amount of games, live spectating, challenge user bugs (used final burn alpha)

Both of them use FBA for the emulation of the roms (and that's a good thing)

2DF basically use the nFBA network code, GGPO uses it's own network code which it's closed source. SSFT2THD Remix uses a modification of GGPO network code.

I prefer GGPO for fighting games since it's arguably better but 2DF has more games and probably more people. What really annoys me about 2DF it's that there is no offline installer.

One thing for sure is that both GGPO and 2DF are miles better than Kaillera. And that's to be expected i guess since they are newer programs.

One warning to scrubs (like me) though. Be prepared for a serious beating

hmm, i've gotten worse lag from ggpo than 2df, maybe cos i've never hosted on 2df.

Well, there is always the ping factor. Also both programs don't work optimally with SF 3 Third Strike. (i think 2DF might be better with this game)

Other than that GGPO isn't forgiving when you don't open the required ports and it's very likely to have problems because of that.

Of course 2DF also requires to open ports for optimal operation but let's say is more "forgiving".

Also in GGPO options make sure the smoothing option is set to 0 instead of default 1. The 0 option requires lower pings to perform correctly but you will have 0 input lag instead of 1 frame delay with the default option.
