I want to collect some old games..have a few questions
I was wondering what everyone does when collecting games.
When you run into a multiplatform game will you buy all of them?
an example would be Braindead 13 / Herc's Adventures / Flashback
Do you make sure the game is complete if it's a cd based game and a cart. based game?
How often do you add game(s) to your collection.

I'm not nearly as hardcore as some others here. I add around 2-10 games a month, most of those are done cheaply.
As far as multiplatform games, I just buy for the platform that I prefer playing on. Favorite controller for the type of genre, etc... Sometimes one version is just better all around than the others so thats the one you get.
I don't buy many cartridge based games, but those are usually carts only (with the exception of the new stuff like the DS). If a disc game doesn't have the manual and/or case, it's usually a deal breaker unless I can source those elsewhere or it's just that good a deal.

For me, CD based games need to be complete. As for different versions, if it's a direct cross port, like both versions of SF4, then I generally don't pick it up. However, I've picked up nearly every version of the early Final Fantasy games, as each edition adds something new, and I am a consumer whore.

I usually just go for the superior version. For example, when I had to choose between Vampire Savior (Saturn) or Darkstalkers 3 (PSX), I went with VS due to Saturn's controller and the Saturn version having no load times and no animation loss like the PSX version. It also helped that the Saturn version was about 5 times cheaper than the PSX version.
The only way I will pick up the PSX versions of a 2D fighting game is if I find them for dirt cheap at a flea market/pawn shop/what have you. That's the only time I'll go for completion of a collection like that - if I can do it extremely cheaply.
As for complete, I obviously prefer complete copies, but it is no deal breaker. I always put games that came in jewel cases in DVD cases anyway, since jewel cases break so easily and I like to keep them preserved - it also helps my PSX, Saturn and Dreamcast titles fit in with my PS2, Gamecube and Xbox games.
It also has a lot to do with money; for example, I managed to get a copy of Shining the Holy Arc for dirt cheap because it didn't come with the case, and it's no big deal because I simply printed off a custom case for it anyway.
As for adding games to my collection - that depends on my luck and my money stash. While I had a tip-heavy job and lived near Charlotte, the games flowed like a river. In that time, I think I picked up what is now most of my Saturn, Genesis and NES collection - which is easily at least 100 games.

Re: I want to collect some old games..have a few questions
While I do get a certain thrill from possessing stuff that's complete, in the box, especially if it's rare, my real satisfaction comes from actually PLAYING the games. So as far as I'm concerned playability and affordability take backseat priority to whether it's "complete" or an original printing. So, to answer your question about completedness of a game, if it makes the game more expensive I'll just go for a cheaper disc only version and if it's not I'll get it complete. If something's multiplatform I'll get the version for the system I personally like the most. For instance, I really like the Sega Saturn, so if something was released Saturn/Playstation I'll get the former version. I add games to my collection whenever I have a little spare money, which lately hasn't been too often since I'm somewhat of a poor college student right now.

I buy those collection disks for ps2 and Gamecube or play emulators
. Considering I only collected for my Sega Saturn and that is one bloody expensive console after the first 20 games or so.

For multiplatform games, I pick up the one that I consider to be the "best". For example, Viewtiful Joe for the PS2 has Dante (of Devil May Cry) as a playable character, while the Gamecube one does not. So I bought the PS2 one, even though it's said to have and inferior framerate. Because I want Dante.
I don't make sure games are complete, although I would recommend doing that. Piles of discs and cartridges are ugly.
I add games to my collection fairly often, at least 2-3 games per month.

Re: I want to collect some old games..have a few questions
For me, collecting is all about the thrill of the hunt. Outside of a small handful of imports, my entire collection has been found in the wild. Wherever I go I hit flea markets, thrift stores, pawn shops, etc. looking for game to add to the collection. Not only is this cheaper than buying online, it also adds another dimension to collecting. My personal collecting goal is to find all of the original Nintendo games in the wild (and I'm over 450 at the moment). Plus there is nothing like searching for years for rare games in the wild and finally finding something (I've found Atari 2600 prototypes in the wild before). I like to add complete games to my collection, but it isn't a necessity (especially on the older stuff since it can be tough to find). However you decide to build you collection, just be sure to have fun with it.
Re: I want to collect some old games..have a few questions
I usually "collect" for one or two systems at a time and mostly buy what I want to play (and or the really rare stuff) I can't afford to have a big collection on hand no space or money so for now I buy I play I sell someday I'll have a place just for my games and the money to buy and keep them all but not now
