In my living room I have a 720p/1080i 60 inch JVC CRT projection television. I love the thing... it is what I play all my video games on. Oh dear do I love it!
I don't know much about flat screens or digital TV doodars.
What I do know is that people are going crazy for them, so I wonder down to Tottenham Court Road (the electronics centre of London) and have a look around. They have massive Sony this and Samsung that ... but if you look at the actually image its terrible.
All movement is blurry as hell and there are strange digital artefacts around moving objects. Even on the latest expensive Sony screens (£1600!) the image just looks 'digital' and you can see the individual pixels. I seriously think the technology just hasn't matured yet and its gonna take a good year or two until the image quality is really sharp and clear.

There's a problem when comparing picture quality at a store. You need to ask them how it is they hooked up their system. Most of them use analog splitters that take on analog signal and split it amongst several TVs... some even cheaper stores don't even use HDTV signals and only hook up using S-vid or something. Both not using proper HDTV signal, or splitting the signal will reduce quality.
I know that on my TV I get no artifacts. Especially from my XBOX360. God does that thing look gorgeous. I even went out and got the HD-DVD player for it... and even though I only have a 720p television you really can see the difference.

The thing is, my uncle has some massive Sony Bravia thing in his front room and it too suffers from the blur and artefacts.
I'm really not convinced by it all and the moment. I reckon give it two years and big screens will be clearer, cheaper and brighter.
I purchased a 51" Hitachi CRT rear-projection set from Circuit City for $799. The set has one HDMI input, 2 component, and 5 composite/S-Video inputs. The TV will handle 480i/480p/720p/1080i. The picture is absolutely gorgeous and you cannot beat it for the money. The only drawback is the size of the unit. It's 21" deep, and it ways 150lb. It was a pain in the ass getting it up the stairs to my apartment, but it was well worth the effort. My Xbox and PS2 games look amazing on the set, and I'll be picking up a Xbox360 very soon. If anyone here is looking at getting a HDTV, I would advise you to look at avsforum.com They have forums for every type of HDTV and a section just for HD gaming. You'll find a lot of good advice on what to look for and what to avoid.

actually, most HDTVs with problems have them with LDTV content from what I have heard. Usually 480i just looks poor on the sets considering all of the processing the TV must do on the image, combined with the poor video processors cheaper TVs have. That's why if you buy a pretty inexpensive HDTV, don't skimp out on a nice A/V Receiver. Also, I'd advise looking at the Xbox 360 forum over there so you can get a 1080p that can play 360.
