get a job

so, i'm starting to really kick my job hunt into gear. i'd be most interested in something to do with japanese language or video games. i see some posts on craigslist now and then for video game jobs via wired talent but most seem pretty closed off to people inexperienced with working in the game world. oh, and i actually tried to go to two separate play n' trades today to pick up job applications, only to get lost and not find either location. i'm 0 for 3 on actually going to a play 'n trade

anyone know of any places for video game jobs (or other such seemingly awesome jobs) that allow for inexperienced candidates?

I worked at a play n' trade in oregon this summer, it was a pretty fun job and really relaxed. Plus they carry retro games, so there is always the chance that you might be able to snag something sweet with your employee discount before it hits the shelves! Thats how I scored complete copies of phantasy star 2 and 3 for almost nothing

It seems impossible to get a job at a game store, and even if you did, it would be part time and minimum wage, and likely very unstable as they don't keep people very long. Then of course there's gamestop, where you'll never get hired if you have a brain or a soul.

Personally, I dont think there is a real job in gaming to be found. It's a stupid dream far too many people have.

The play and trade near me, which is in oregon, is going out of business...so that might not be such a good idea. How about using your japanese language skills for something.

Naw man, it is probably just like any other high demand job. You just gotta have a great set of skills, not be a douche, and be in the right place at the right time.

Unless we are talking video game retail. Then you just have to know the right people.

What i think doesn't exist is some kinda job where you just play finished games all day long and eat pizza.

The job market is absolutely brutal. I've been out of work since Thanksgiving and to give you an idea of how bad things are, I actually got excited when I got a rejection notice last week. Not that I was happy about not getting the job, but because after 5+ months of sending out resumes I finally had a company that took the time to reject me, rather than just throwing my resume away.

That said, if anybody needs a photographer or video producer in the Chicago area, I'll be moving there in a matter of months

If you are actually bilingual then you can try using that to help edge you into some work. I don't think Play N' Trade or Gamestop will care too much about that though. If you want a job in gaming retail you just need to try by basically filling out applications. I agree with the comments that state the pay will most likely be weak. It's a poor career choice unless you decide to go into management. It’s like getting a job at a record store.

Again, if you're bilingual, try getting a job at a game company. Make a resume, include your Japanese language skills and send it out. Include any basic computer skills you have too, make it sound nice. You might get lucky, some company might need you and would be willing to train you just because they need someone who can translate for them. Have confidence and sell yourself to them. Besides, if you’re unemployed it’s not like you have much else to do. Good luck with the hunting!

so, semi-on the topic, i got a callback yesterday from a job i applied for on craigslist, did an interview this morning. 10 minutes later, the guy said i was hired! awesome!

it's an anime distribution company that also sells some u.s. comics and toys and stuff like that. i start early next week.

How the hell does this happen for people? I am applying at pizza places even, and get no response.
