I fail to see tany rhytmn games on the DS aside from the Ouendan games and Taiko no Tatsujin and I doubt those were what you were thinking of.
First of all I second Trauma center. A really good game to sink some hours into. I would recommend the following:
Geometry Wars Galaxies: Robotron on a handheld = good
Contra 4
Space Invaders Extreme
Wario Ware
Point blank: Ultra addictive minigames, you will destroy your screen
Starfish platformer game that looks awesome

Re: Starfish platformer game that looks awesome
I've got space invaders extreme actually. Contra 4 is probably worth getting, although there's enough contra games for actual consoles that I don't have which I would probably buy first. And I haven't played geometry wars but I'd buy it for 360 before I'd get it on DS. I don't really go anywhere where I'd play a handheld so there has to be some extra incentive for me to spend money on a game that I have to play on a tiny screen. And since there's too many console games that I don't even have the time or money for, I have to be reaaaaally inspired to buy a ds game. I guess that's why I'm extra picky about it. It's just one of the few places you can still find games reminiscent of snes/genesis era so I'm always dissapointed that more people don't take advantage of that.
