It might just be a rumor, but I've seen a few websites mention it. Plus there is this set of texture comparisons between the original and the high def:

The texture comparison is from a texture replacement project that's been going on for a while. I'm not sure if it's complete, but it just replaces the textures in the original 64 game, it's not a remake
