Thoughts on the first two DBZ Tenkaichi games and Super DBZ?

I've played a lot of Budokai 3 and enjoyed it. Best Buy currently has a box set with Tenkaichi 1 & 2 and Super DBZ for $15. With my rewards certificate it'll only be $10, so I'm thinking about snagging it. I've been watching the series again, so I'm in the mood for some DBZ gaming.

Anybody here play these games? If so, how do they compare to Budokai 3 and did you like them? Is there a larger roster in Tenkaichi 1/2 than Budokai 3?

I didn't care for Super DBZ but I loved Budokai 3!!! It has more characters in Tenkaichi games: fusions, saiyan forms, etc.. I still like Budokai 3 better than Tenkaichi games but for that much it's not a bad deal for a bundle of 3 DBZ games.. I'm a big DBZ fan..

Loved the shit out of Budokai 3, especially the greatest hits version because it had optional japanese voices, and a few extras. I could never get into the Tenkaichi series. The controls and camera just weren't doable for me.

I have (well, had - I can't find it anymore) DBZ Tenkaichi 2 for the Wii and I enjoyed it. The camera system can take some getting used to, but I felt the free-roaming/free-flight suited DBZ better than traditional 1-on-1 fighting. The only thing I could think of that would have made DBZ:DT2 better would have been a 4-player mode - if multiplayer is going to be split-screen anyway, why not go all out?

I had a lot of hopes for Super DBZ, but it was ultimately disappointing. It had about as much impact as a fan game - a really good fan game, mind you, but it didn't have nearly the replay value that any of the Budokai/Tenkaichi games had.

Stick with Budokai 3

I hated Tenkaichi (1, only one I've played), it reminded me of the older DBZ fighting games that sucked. It was also way too easy; you could just spam an attack and win in 3 seconds. In Tenkaichi you also couldn't transform in the middle of a battle, I heard it was changed in the later games though.

It might be worth it to you though, 15$ for 3 games is a good deal.

I can't wait for the next entries in the Burst Limit games

The Tenkaichi games just aren't my cup of tea. I have all three of them for the PS2, but they are all essentially the same game, just with each one having a larger roster than the last. You could just buy the third one on PS2 or Wii and call it a day for that series. Likewise, I didn't care much for Budokai 1 or 2, yet Budokai 3: Special Edition (AKA Greatest Hits version) is an awesome game. There is a new one out for PS2 that just came out in the past year that is essentially Budokai 4, and I have it, but haven't spent much time playing it yet. It has a control setup that is like a cross between Budokai 3 and Burst Limit.

Super Dragonball Z I personally loved, it was made by the people (formerly Capcom Employees who left to start their own company sometime back) who made Street Fighter II way back when. The controls are very Street Fighterish, and as a fighting game, it rocks. Where Budokai 3 focuses more on transformations/special moves, Super DBZ focuses on being a solid fighter, that happens to be based on DBZ with DBZ characters. I know some dislike it, but it has a lot of depth to it if you practice up. Definately a lot more fun with a friend than alone. Bear in mind it was originally an arcade game overseas, so there is not a big story mode or lots of extras, but as a fighting game, it is probably the best DBZ based fighting game.

I would get that pack at Best Buy for Super DBZ, which is definitely worth it, and pass the Tenkaichi 1 and 2 off to a friend or sell them.

If you want the best PS2 DBZ collection, you could grab the following and have all your bases covered, and just forget the rest:

*Dragonball Z Budokai 3: Special Edition (Greatest Hits)
*Dragonball Z: Infinite World (Budokai 4)
*Super Dragonball Z
-Dragonball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 3 (If you must have one of them)

If you have those four, the following you can pass on, as it would be redundant and less fun to play any of them:

-DBZ Budokai 1 & 2
-DBZ Budokai 3 (Regular version)
-DBZ Tenkaichi 1 & 2
-DBZ Sagas (A 3D two player brawler that is just horrible)

That's just the problem - because I knew former SFII employees worked on it, I had high hopes. As it stands, it just disappointed me. It didn't have enough flash to feel DBZ, and it didn't feel like a deep enough fighter to keep me interested.

I feel the best DragonBall Z fighter is Dragonball Z 2 Super Battle.

This one felt a lot more Street Fighter II than Super DragonBall Z, in my opinion.

The first DBZ Budokai Tenchaichi was hard to get into, and the same with the 2nd. But DBZ:BT 3 was phenomenal for me, since it seemed that they perfected the combat system and made it much more intense. Super DBZ was 'meh' at best. But they REALLY need to shorten up the names. I try asking for the game at GameStop or PlaynTrade and run out of breath mid-sentence lol.

I never played the first Tenkaichi game nor Super DBZ but I played the hell out of Tenkaichi 2. The story is way longer than Tenkaichi 3 and the customization is not as complicated as Tenkaichi 3. Despite the lower roster count than Tenkaichi 3, Tenkaichi 2 will always be my favorite DBZ game along with Budokai 3 and Legends (PSX).
