best gane controller for the pc

Post by gibberoids »

i found my old saitek p3000 the other day, and whilst it works well with some emulators it does not work well with emulators that require the use of the analog and digital sticks at the same time. there is a button on the pad to switch between them, when configuring the buttons in ePSXe they are registered differently depending on whether you have it set to analog or digital.

so my question is, who makes decent pads with good d-pads these days? i imagine a dual shock clone will be a good choice in general, but there are thousands of them made by all sorts of people so im after a recommendation of a company that makes good pads.

thanks

I use sixaxis. Best thing about PS3 is that several of the hookups and things like that are just standard. You can hook a sixaxis upto a computer right out of the box.. A quick search for the driver and you are up and running. For fighting games I would recommend the Saturn USB pad. Although I have never used it on a PC, the Saturn model 2 pad is awesome for those types of games.
owned: Atari VCS, Intellivision, ColecoVision, NES, NES2, Sega Master System, Turbografx-16, Genesis/Sega CD Model 1, Genesis/Sega CD Model 2/32x, SNES, Atari Jaguar, Virtual Boy, GBA, 3DO, Saturn, Playstation, PSone, N64, Dreamcast, PS2, Gamecube, Xbox, PSP, Xbox 360, Wii, PS3
wanted: Cd-I, Neo Geo AES

I didn't have any luck with my PS3 controller. Are you using the dual shock controller, or the original?

As far as Logitech goes, I have this one...

Had it for years, and isn't bad at all. The D-Pad could be better, and the button placement isn't the best, but its a decent controller. Also, it didn't cost a lot. I've seen newer Logitech USB controllers that look like they improved the design, but I have no need to check them out.

And mentioning the Saturn USB pad, you can use almost ANY console controller with a USB adapter. There's one adapter that lets you use a N64 or PS1/2 controller, so that's a good value. If you don't have a PS3 controller, you can use a PS2 which is identical. I know some people really hate the N64 controller, but I know a few people that say it's their favorite by far.

I have used both the sixaxis and the dual shock 3 with the same results. No motion sensing and no bluetooth (you still have to connect via the USB cable). I cant remember where I downloaded the driver, but googling sixaxis driver took me to a list of places that seemed to have the same download. The only difference between that and the dual shock 2 when used on the PC are the analog triggers which are nice to have in racing games.

I had one of those years ago and hated every part of it. I think I gave it to my Dad who just didn't care. I guess it worked OK for the one game he played (Links). The new Logitech precision and dual action pads are leaps and bounds better than that Wingman.

As far as the Saturn pad is concerned. The USB ones on eBay that you can find for $20-$25 work excellent on both the PC and the PS3. Cheaper than what you would pay for a (used) Saturn pad and the adapter. Of course if you already had the Saturn pad then...
