Crossovers still serve a purpose in some situations. But that's why they're not very common.
Anyway, like the others have said, FreeMCBoot plus ESR will handle all your backup playing needs if you refuse to go the HDD method. Don't risk a mod chip if you dont have to.
Yeah, I don't know, there aren't many games for PS2 that I'd want that I don't already have (or would just buy) so I probably wont want to waste time installing FreeMCBoot OR a mod chip anyway since I already have HDLoader.
I geuss my main need is to save time. I dont mind swapping, or HD or even ESR, though I need to learn about this ESR thing. Like how much compatibility there is. I like cogswap, it works decently. I also have swap magic disc. My main things is when I play I like to turn on certain cheats to save time like invincibility. I dont have tons of time to replay and replay things, as I work and work and work, oh did I say I work? So I want to be able to use an action replay or something like that. This way I can enjoy the story without playing for 500 hours. Otherwise I may never get to play. So does anyone know of anything that will let me load my back up from HD, or cogswap through an action replay.
By the way all of the debate has helped me. I have learned a lot here.

Is it really difficult to find someone to install a modchip for you in the US? I just paid a technician to install the modchip in my PS2 and it all went fine. The chip I bought had some nice features like upscaling for HDTV and running softwares from flashdrives, so it was well worth it.
I would install the chip myself, but I've clocked a lot of hours with a solder iron. From what I read, the PS2 looks like the most difficult chip to install, so I can see why people don't even wanna bother with the hassle. One day I'll end up putting a chip in mine, I'm sure, but right now downloading 2GB files of games I don't even care about isn't worth it.
