I've never touched them, but now I'm considering both. Also Advance 2 now that I think about it.
X-2 appears to be the point where I threw my hands up and said "Okay, that's it. We've gone too far. We had a nice run, but this is just too girly for me." Not that X didn't have its moments, but I didn't finish it. I got a decent ways in, quit for two years, came back made it to the end and didn't feel like grinding to beat the boss. Its not that I hated the world or characters, its just that X-2 appeared to be everything about the series that I couldn't get into. Girly stuff, anime singing, focus on exploration and sidequests, and not enough giant swords or gunswords. Without swords to laugh at, what appeal is there? Final Fantasy Advance 2 is another one I've considered. The first Final Fantasy Tactics and I had a love affair that's lasted years, but Tactics Advance has proved to be unplayable.
12 I just passed on completely. The massive multiplayer stuff in 11 didn't appeal to me, mainly because of the monthly fee, but then after playing a few I've realized their all the same game. Information I have tells me that 12 is a psuedo-MMO like game. I don't know how to feel about that. It appears to have things going for it, ties to Final Fantasy Tactics for example, but then it has things like the main character. Look at his outfit. It just screams "No. This is not what you're into at all sir. Remember how you thought you could get into Kingdom Hearts 2 and couldn't? This is like that all over again. Except without Disney."
So help me Obi Wan Kenobi, you're my only hope. What are your thoughts and opinions on the games? Knowing that I love Final Fantasy games, but have a track record of half finishing them or getting to the world of ruin and finding out I had to reload an earlier save to get a character and being frustrated enough to forget it for years and try to go back and not finish it, what would you say? They're both budget priced. I might pick them up and try them out anyway, I like trying games out even if they're not my thing. But I wanted some opinions from our humble hardcore community. So what say you? X-2 yay or nay? XII yes or no?

I would skip Final Fantasy X-2 as the only redeeming feature in that game for me was battle system.. I highly recommend Final Fantasy XII.. great story, excellent voiceovers.. graphics looked great too!! As an RPG gamer one of the best on PS2 easily..

I'd say you should honestly give FFXII a chance. The biggest thing you see MMO-wise over a game such as Secret of Mana is that it will auto attack for you. Seamless battles are nothing new; they're just new for FF. The gambit system can either be good or bad, depending on how you use it and how you interpret the way you use it. I really enjoyed it since it let me really get a level of control over my characters without directly controlling them. Others are put off by the fact that they are giving their party over to the AI.
Something you could always try is find a copy of Dragon Quest VIII with the FFXII demo. DQVIII is a great game on it's own (especially if you're a fan of some good turn-based RPG action) and the demo will give you a good idea of how the combat engine works. YOu don't get much insight into the intricacies of the gambit system, but at least you get to feel how it is to control your own character.
I personally did not like FFX-2. Since the whole game is mission-based you kind of lose the exploration factor that every other RPG has. I actually didn't mind the all-female dress up part; it was the part where you were playing small chunks of an RPG at a time.

Re: Final Fantasy X-2 and 12
My copy of Dragon Warrior 8 didn't come with the demo disc. I wasn't surprised, but I would have liked to give it a try. A good demo always could sale me on a game or make me pass on it.
My local gamestore had both X-2 and XII, I'm pretty sure I could find either at just about any gamestore, at least for now. I don't want to have a hankering to play these games ten years from now and have to pay two hundred dollars to do it. Plus if I catch a good sale on I can get them even cheaper than that. Right now I'm neck deep in so many other RPGs and considering playing Earthbound, its just a mess right now. But I do want to pick them up, play either for an hour or so to get the jist of whats going on, then come back when I have more time.
What about Advance 2? Is the storyline and job system as they were in the first Tactics Advance? I usually take a gameboy or PSP with me to work. Crisis Core I'm definitely picking up, if only to try and piece together what the hell happened in seven. From what I understand its more of an action RPG, but I'm sold on that. On the DS side, I got 3 and love it, especially its difficulty. I'm considering the IV remake, even though I've played quite a bit of it across several platforms and never finished it. Part of me thinks buying it on the DS would force me to finish it up, but even then I don't know.
Anyone else got any opinions on the dress up system in X-2? It seems, I don't know. Not geared towards me. I like customization as much as anyone, but at a certain point you're just playing dress up the girls in skimpy outfits. Not exactly the type of game I want to play. Not that theres anything wrong with skimpy outfitted girls, I just can't see myself getting into playing dress up and wandering around Final Fantasy X's world, but happy. The main thing I liked about X was how it always had that sense of "Sin just attacked, and everyone died." going on. In X-2, at least what I saw of it, it seems like everything worked out at the end of the first game. So I don't know. Plus where I never finished X, it would only tempt me to put time into playing it again and considering I'm already stretched so thin, I don't think I could do that.

So the dress sphere system of X-2, don't think of it as pretty princess dress up. Think of it like the FFV job system. The big difference, though, is that you can change jobs in combat. Each character has a sphere grid, which can store a certain amount of dresses. And you can only change to adjacent dresses, which adds some tatical choice to how you set it up. For example, take this grid:

You can equip five jobs, so if you stick White Mage in the middle you will always be able to get off a quick heal. And there's also gates, where if you switch from one node to another and pass a gate you get a bonus. For example, you can get +5 strength if you switch between two nodes.
And just like in FFV, you unlock various abilities for each job as you battle in them and gain levels.

I'm in the middle of 12 right now and I love it. You can spend hours in that game at a time and not even be playing the story line, of course, you don't have to do that though. I feel the game has a lot in it with out being overly complicated. I just wish the main character could find a shirt that fits.

Picked up 12 and X-2. As well as an assortment of other games.
Just put X-2 in and I'm already cringing a little. Its started with some sort of concert. Hopefully I can get over the storyline nonsense and enjoy the job system, as that was always fun stuff. Even if it involves dresses.

Now that FFXII is pretty cheap I would at least give it a try. I personally did not care for it, but most of my friends who like FF like this one. As for FFT2 I would get it, I liked it and it does go deeper into the overall class system. The story is still kinda blah on this one.
