Summer Games Challenge 2026 - PRESS I FOR INVENTORY

Post by Key-Glyph »

So yesterday I was minding my own business wandering around the grocery store when the soda aisle was like

Knock knock

and I was like, "Who's --"

Image

KNOCK KNOCK IT'S KNUCKLES

THE BLOW-THROWA
INDEPENDENT FLOWA
MAGIC'L EM'RALD HOLDA

ITS SUMMA U RACKET POSTA
EACH MIN IT GROWS OLDA
AND UR CONSOLE'S GETTIN COLDA

DON'T LET FUN GET AWAY
GO STRIKE UP THE POSSE

And I was like, "oh shit, Knuckles! The Challenge!!"

And just like that, energized by the sudden reminder, here we are. Start stockpiling your snacks and whipping up those lists, friends. We've lost a little bit of time due to my delay, but the Summer Challenge is forever, and our bonds are unbreakable. I'm happy to join you all, once again, in our annual adventure. Let's form up our party and set forth!

If you're new to the Challenge, behold: the traditional explanation!

What is the Racketboy Summer Games Challenge?

Over a decade ago, SnickerD00dle kicked off an annual challenge: pick ten classic games you've never finished, and play through them all in a summer. The point is not to create an obligation or pressure to "win" by completing your ten, but rather to inspire you to dive into a bunch of games you've been meaning to get around to anyway. Year after year this motivates a cohort of Racketpeeps to gather together, cheer each other on, and live vicariously through each other's experiences with some dearly beloved classics. And here we go again!

What Counts as a Classic?

Alienjesus, legendary Challenge organizer for untold numbers of years, explained this well in a previous thread:
"It's pretty subjective, but generally it's a game that's highly regarded for the era, system, or genre it represents."

(There was once a grand and hilarious tradition of dsheinem dunking on people's lists for not being classic enough, but that was for comedic purposes only. There's no actual gatekeeping here. Play what's in your heart!)

Do I Really Need to Play Ten Games?!

The short answer is no! We've noticed that folks sometimes stress about the rules of the Challenge -- and may even refrain from joining entirely -- due to the perceived commitment of finishing ten games. Always remember that there is no obligation to do so and that the rules are just an arbitrary framework for generating fun. That said, if it helps put you at ease to approach the Summer Challenge with defined guidelines, consider adopting one of the following "difficulty levels" that best suits you:

PEACEFUL MODE:
  • Make a list of 1-10 classic games you've never beaten
  • Try to finish 1 before the summer's end
VETERAN MODE:
  • Make a list of 5-10 classic games you've never beaten
  • Try to finish 5 before the summer's end
HARDCORE MODE (SnickerD00dle's original stipulations):
  • Make a list of 10 classic games you've never beaten
  • Try to finish all of them before the summer's end
(And yes, a Nightmare Mode can exist for those of you who want to tackle 10+ games. People have done this before. Good luck. o7)

Season Dates
  • Season Start: June 2026
  • Season End: September 2026
(Please note that season dates are just loose guidelines. The goal is just to get active between now and the fall.)

We're off to the races everybody, so create your lists (or just start playing)! Hope to see all the regulars gravitate back here again, and a warm welcome to you newer folks who've decided to wade in for the first or second time. <3

Hi Key!

Glad to see the thread up again this year! I wasn't planning to participate this year because I'm also working on a challenge of my own to finish one game for every system I own this year (37 across the year). However, taking a look at my list, I think I could pull together a reasonable set of 5 for the summer challenge from my already planned list if I prioritise those first! So here's what I have:

1. Mega Man Legends (PS1)
2. Star Control 2 (3DO)
3. Sonic CD (MCD)
4. Radiant Silvergun (Saturn)
5. Grandia II (DC)

There's one big extra challenge for my list which is that I have a baby due in August. Between baby arriving and already having a 2 year old, I don't know if I will realistically get too far through my list this summer - but I can make an attempt and do what I can!

I am a bit concerned about having 2 RPGs in the list, but this was the most 'classic' set of 5 I think I could make from my planned games. The rest of my remaining titles are in this spoiler tag if anyone wants to suggest any substitutions:
AI: The Somnium Files (Switch)
Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze (Wii U)
Captain Rainbow (Wii)
Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness (GC)
Rocket: Robot on Wheels (N64)
Pokemon Conquest (DS)
Mega Man Zero (GBA)
Dragon Warrior Monsters (GBC)
Teleroboxer (VB)
Togepi's Great Adventure (PokeMini)
Yakuza: Like A Dragon (PS4)
The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel 2 (Vita)
Yggdra Union (PSP)
Super Fantasy Zone (MD)
Madou Monogatari II (GG)
El Shaddai: Ascension of the Metatron (360)
Fatal Fury F (NGPC)
Mr. Driller (WSC)
Escape from Monkey Island (PC)

Rome: Total War is probably my favorite of the entire series. If you enjoy those kinds of games, it is a great one.

Do we still use the 10 year rule?

Star Control II for 3DO, now that's some hardcore stuff, perhaps even more hardcore than Radiant Silvergun!

AJ’s list is absolutely based. I’ve beaten Mega Man Legends and Sonic CD, and I can attest to their classic status. Just great games, particularly Mega Man Legends. Star Control II I played a lot on my friend’s DOS PC very long ago. It blew my mind, and I need to make an actual attempt at beating it someday.

Good luck! I’ve bounced off multiple games in this list - Skies of Arcadia, Viewtiful Joe, Ninja Gaiden II - but based on my time with them, I see them as classics. The ones I’ve beaten are Beyond Good & Evil, which is a very solid Zelda-like from a great designer, and PoP: Sands of Time, which had a really neat mechanic 20+ years ago. I hope you like them.

On the sports games…why did you pick those particular years?

My playing has slowed down so much that I have never been able to make a good run at one of these summer challenges (especially now that RSI issues make action games painful), but I always enjoy reading about everyone's exploits.

Yay! Oh, hooray. Thanks for jumping in so quickly, everyone. So excited!

Just happy to have you, Maru. I was also planning on taking a backseat this summer because I'm working through some family stuff at the moment, but my beloved Summer Games Challenge is invigorating me. We'll see if it holds. If not, I will join you over by the soda cooler and we can people-watch together.

Is it going to get in the way of your having fun? Then no. I'd also argue that playing a newer installment in a long-running series in particular is still very much in the spirit, since it'll just lead to a lot of discussion on the history and development of a classic franchise over time.

Oh, I think my partner played this one! I'll have to go through our games and look. If it's the one I'm thinking of, not only did he have a blast playing it, but I loved watching him go through it. Super entertaining. The controls felt "right," even as an onlooker.

Thank you so much for saving me from the triple-post, friend. And I'm thrilled you're doing this one! It was on my list last year too, but I'd have to get the gumption to install it on my Mega Everdrive to go for it. Maybe the inspiration will strike as the summer rolls on.

I've got my list together and have already gotten started. More on that soon.
