I drove my son out of the city today to trade a mountain bike - mountain-biking and, specifically, repairing mountain bikes - is his hobby - and I stopped by a really great game store on the way home. They had some awesome stuff, including a CIB copy of Kuon (PS2), The Flintstones: Surprise at Dinosaur Peak (NES), all the Zelda CDI games, a wall of CIB TG16 games, etc.

I didn’t get any of those things. I did get a few cool things, though:

Risk (Genesis; CIB)
E-SWAT (SMS; CIB)
Lufia II: Rise of the Sinistrals (SNES; Cart)
Rampart (SNES; Cart)

Risk is the “clamshell” version, and I’ll swap it out for my cardboard box version. E-SWAT is one of the eight games I needed to complete my NTSC SMS collection. Rampart is an inexpensive game I’ve had trouble finding in the wild, and I got a good price on Lufia II. (It’s not in flawless condition - theees some fading on the back label - but i was able to get it for about 15% less than eBay prices.)

I've been meaning to take some photos and post an update in this thread and finally got around to it!

Image

The few games I came across in January. Overall, this was a slower month for me, as I was feeling under the weather for most of the month.

Alundra (PS1) - Came across it in really good shape with the map included, so I went for it. This game's been on my wishlist for a while as I'm a fan of action-adventure games and Climax Entertainment. Interested in experiencing their take on the genre.

Dungeons and Dragons Collection (SAT) - I initially tried the digital version of this game on the XBox 360 years ago and I've wanted to try the Saturn port for quite some time. With this title being mentioned in the Together Retro thread recently, I thought it'd be a good time to give it a go.

Image

A few Genesis games I pre-ordered last year arrived in February. I haven't gotten around to trying these just yet, but when I'm in the mood to get punished by some shmups, I'll fire them up.

Undeadline (GEN) - This game was originally released as a JP only title and was a rare and pricey import cartridge to pick up. I was pretty surprised to see it get a US re release, but there have been a good amount of games getting these types of releases in recent years.

Slap Fight MD (GEN) - Another title that had been only released in JP and Korea. The JP Mega Drive release was limited as well and the US version was initially canceled. Cool to see the game appear on the system all these years later and looking forward to checking it out.

Grind Stormer (GEN) - I had been interested in this one for quite some years but I was hesitant to buy the original US version of the game due to it being released on a Tengen cart. I already learned my lesson with Tengen Genesis carts, as my Gauntlet IV cart didn't work, until Ziggy repaired it (thanks Zig). I was surprised to see a new release for this one!

Here are the games I got throughout March so far. Both games that have been on my wishlist for quite some time.

Final Fight 2 (SNES) - As a beat 'em up fan, I've been meaning to get this cart for a number of years, but I hadn't come across it in good shape. Glad to finally have this one and complete the Final Fight trilogy on SNES! Curious about how others feel about this one.

Shadow Hearts (PS2) - I played through Koudelka on the PS1 last year and loved it. The graphics, battle system, and soundtrack all did it for me, so I was really interested in checking out it's successor, Shadow Hearts. I've only heard good things and can't wait to dive into this one. I will probably fire this one up in the fall, close to Halloween.

Great pick ups, Note!

I picked up Alundra last year (or maybe it was the year before). It's a great title. It was on my list because I am also a fan of Climax Entertainment.

Dungeons and Dragons is also one I want to pick up some time. I have recently tried the English translation of the first disc, as I have a Fenrir installed in one of my Saturns.

It's also interesting to hear you have had issues with Tengen carts and specifically Gauntlet IV. I had to buy 3 or 4 copies of that game before I found one that actually worked!

I picked up Shadow Hearts a year or two ago. I have never played Koudelka (I really want to pick it up some time, but it is similarly pricey here in PAL regions), but I enjoyed the little I have played of Shadow Hearts.

Thanks, Reprise! You've posted a lot of great games in this thread recently!

I'm glad to hear you liked Alundra. I always appreciated the art style for those early Climax games, so I'm glad to finally have picked this one up.

From what I understand, Tengen infamously cheaped out on the parts used for their Genesis games, so a lot of their carts have died over the years. For my copy of Gauntlet IV, I bought a copy online and when I got it, it didn't boot up at all. Ziggy looked at it for me and IIRC, the PCB was the issue. After that experience, and with Grind Stormer being an expensive game nowadays also with a Tengen cart, I decided to pass on it. I'm glad that Genesis fans now have another option to play the game on real hardware.

Koudelka is definitely worth checking out, even if you play it via emulation. Very unique RPG and it's on the shorter side, I think it took me around 30 hours or less to beat it. Can't wait to try Shadow Hearts later in the year.

Thanks!

I am a bit out of the loop with which Genesis games have been re-released by Limited Run Games and other similar companies. It's great that we have been given an opportunity to pick up games like this without needing to pay the insane aftermarket prices and also potentially import them too. I should have bought some of these.

I think I might have actually stumbled upon a discussion here about Tengen and Gauntlet IV when I was researching online about the game after I kept buying dead carts. I am getting a sense of deja vu.

I will definitely check out Koudelka some time.

No prob! And look forward to seeing everyone's pick-ups throughout the year.

These Genesis releases were put out by Retro-Bit. I think in regard to the companies rereleasing old games, they might be the best company doing it. All of the packaging looks great and the carts are good quality. Sometimes shops that offer them for pre-order also get extra copies in stock to be sold afterwards, so it's worth still taking a look for them. They're all still available from US retailers, but I'm not too familiar with EU stockists.

Ah of course, I was aware of some of the Retro-Bit releases, like Eliminate Down and Gley Lancer. I seem to recall a European or UK site might have been stocking some of their releases, but I am not 100% sure. I will have to look into it.
