I was curious to see which Genre or Genres would be popular here so I made this. I find it interesting to see what everyone's personal favorite genre is for whatever reasons so when you vote for your genre, please tell about the first game you played from the genre, the game that really got you into the genre, and your favorite aspecs of it etc. While we're at it go ahead and talk about your least favorite Genre as well. Have fun with this

It was hard to pick, and it was between Adventure, Fighting and Platforming but I ended up picking Fighting since it's had the largest impact on me out of the three. The game that I played first was of course Street Fighter II: Championship Edition for the Genesis. I sucked balls at it and my dad always destroyed me but I still had loads of fun, I think that says something about any game if you lose horribly but you still love it. It wasn't until much later after that had I really played another interesting Fighting game other than Mortal Kombat.
I had finally gotten a Saturn and Virtua Fighter 2 as a pack in, needless to say I was hooked on the game and I couldn't stop playing it, after that Street Fighter Alpha 2 for the Saturn finally did me in and I was officially a Fighting game nut ever since. I always hold Alpha 2 in high regard and pay tribute to it because if I hadn't played it, I probably wouldn't be such a huge fan anyway.
As for what I really stay away from, it would have to be sports and puzzles. I play Wrestling games and thats really all I play from Sports. Puzzles I guess you could consider the entire Myst series that or Adventure/Puzzles but other than that, I hate Tetris and all of it's knock offs...never liked Tetris at all, I found it very boring to be honest.

With the exception of the RPG part, totally the same. May rent madden on wii, considering I don't know jack about strategy in sport, cept a bit in bball, but this may make it fun...I really don't know. tbh, I have way to general taste when it comes to gaming, I can't choose just one.bustaballs wrote:I'm a big RPG guy. RPGs - these often combine truly great storylines (particularly now that the "adventure" genre is very sparsely populated) with awesome gameplay and usually also replayability.
Despite the game coming in 7 floppy disks and me not owning an hard drive for the machine I was running it on, I religiously backed up and swapped disks on my then single drive Amiga 500 to play the original Realms of Arkania game: Blade of Destiny (me and my bro made some effort to play some of that, heh). Not only that, we had to re-make backups frequently because the disks didn't really old very well so much swapping (we fortunately had the good sense not to use the originals). So much effort to play the game says something.
I think in many ways, Syndicate, another great game of my Amiga days has many RPG like elements (or maybe I'm just distorting things here).
In any case, after that problematic first encounter, I played the bug ridden Daggerfall (that is the 2nd Elder Scrolls game, for those that don't know; the modern Oblivion is the 4th RPG in the series, not counting more action driven games like Redguard) in a PC, and greatly enjoyed the freedom. Somewhere along the line I played Diablo, and (I think later) Link's awakening on the original gameboy that a friend lent me and those series (Diablo 2, which I played extensively, and I also had the chance of completing other top view Zelda's) are awesome games in the top under action RPGs (Zelda is not as much of an RPG, perhaps?). I reckon I got into japanese style RPGs a bit slow, and also greatly enjoy them. Chrono Trigger is simply amazing. I have to admit I haven't played many of the great games in this cathegory though.
I think I personally still prefer western style RPGs, like Baldur's gate, NWN, and so many great others, unfortunately some of which I haven't had the chance to play, like Planescape or Oblivion.
But I like many other non RPG genres as well. With some exceptions, I'm not fond of deep simulation games (flight sims anyone?) or sport titles (most american sports I care nothing about, and I think I only like Sensible Soccer as its more of an action/arcade game - and a great one at that).

I miss the olden, golden days of Lucasarts.
I too miss the old days of Lucasarts and their adventure games, although I ended up being able to get ahold of most of them and play them on ScummVm once more...ah that was so great to do. The only ones I don't have are Sam and Max and Full Throttle.
Btw did you happen to like the Myst games?
