I added Wings of Wor for the Sega Genesis on Friday!

It looks like I can finally post on here without getting logged out or banned.

There are so many Shooters on the Genesis that is kind of a crap shoot to see if it is a good one or not. Also, I am not good at them, so I am looking for ones that are relatively easy and fairly basic.

I saw this one on a recent GameSack episode and I tried it out on some emulators. The levels are long, but your shot is wide and you can hold the button to fire. Since I beat Steel Empire last year, I have been looking for my next one and this seemed like a good idea.

Nice pick-up, Markies! I'm in the same boat as you with shmups, as I enjoy playing them but I'm not too good at the genre in general. I'm curious to see how you end up liking it, as it's one I thought about picking up but haven't went for yet.

Definitely wanna snag the physical Switch 2 release of Yooka Replaylee. I was one of the backers for the original version and have since bought it for PS4 and Switch.

I would LOVE to own it physically, and with the Switch 2, I always try to get the physical release if it's not a game key card. REALLY wish game key cards weren't even a thing. I mean, how would it even work if the servers go down? I'd even suffer through slightly slower load times if it means not having to install the entire thing on my Switch 2. Most major Switch 2 games take up at most a quarter or third of the Switch 2's internal memory and microSD Express cards are still WAY too expensive. REALLY wish I could at least use a regular microSD card for Switch 1 games, seeing as that'd free up damn near 200 to 300GB.

The good news is Nintendo are now producing two new Switch 2 cartridge sizes. One of the main reasons why so many third party publishers have opted to use game key cards is because Nintendo initially only supplied 64gb cartridges and at a high cost. Now they are offering 16gb and 32gb cards at a lower cost, hopefully we might see more games come on a proper cartridge. ININ who are bringing out the new R-Type game already announced that it will now be coming out on a proper cartridge instead of a game key card, which was what was originally announced.

Of course that doesn't stop the cheap publishers like Capcom sticking with game key cards, or the games that exceed the 64gb limit to fit on a proper cartridge.

I can't remember if I actually backed Yooka Laylee or not, but I do remember getting the PS4 and Switch versions at launch. The latter was a LRG release that came a little while later. Yooka Replayee seems to have fixed a lot of the issues of the original, but I must admit I haven't played a lot yet. My son has played a lot more than me.

Based off sold eBay auctions, I estimate I save $40-$60 on Super Monaco GP and $30-$80 on Ys Book.

There's suspicion online that this is in part because of rising flash prices due to the AI bubble. These smaller, cheaper cards might end up costing as much, or almost as much as the 64GB cards were at release. Also, there are hints that the smaller carts may be a bit slower than the large carts. Carts are already slower than the Switch's internal memory or the SD Express cards. That's going to create a situation where any developer who is counting on streaming assets is going to have to make sure to target the lowest possible performance threshold for the size of their game. Now, the smaller the game the less likely it is to need to stream assets, especially in the face of the Switch 2's increased RAM, but that's no guarantee.

Hmm that's probably a fairly accurate suspicion that you mention. I hope they don't end up being the same price as the 64gb cartridges. ININ have said R-Type physical will now cost $10 more than than it cost when pre-orders opened and they were planning to use a game key card, so for the time being it seems they hopefully aren't too much more expensive. Of course that can all change though.

Regarding cartridges having a slower transfer speed than the internal memory, I wonder if Nintendo could make it possible to install or partially install games to the internal memory to get around that issue. Granted, for many people, that would defeat the point of owning the cartridge, as many people want to save space on their internal storage, but it's better than having a game key cartridge.

Either way, whilst I don't like it, I am kind of at peace with the fact there isn't really any stopping the demise of physical media.

The cards are slower than internal memory but still significantly faster than Switch 1 cards. Apparently the Switch 2 cards are based on eMMC. Developers who need the extra speed for streaming data will definitely need to target SD Express cards at least, because they can always choose to use the Game Key cards and not worry about speed issues there. There has been discussion elsewhere of whether Nintendo would support an "installation" mode of operation, but that may not prove necessary, at least from Nintendo's perspective.

Merry Christmas all!

My wife got me R-Type Delta HD Boosted for PS5. I actually wanted the Switch version, but Amazon messed up here and everyone ordered the Switch version received the PS5 version (and looking at some of the reviews of the PS5 version, it seems like people who ordered the PS5 version received the Switch version). I wasn't bothered either way though.
