After a few slower months, I picked up a good amount of games the first weekend of August at the Long Island Retro Gaming Expo. The expo is a bit quieter on the first day, so I did most of my shopping on that Friday. The Saturn games and more common SNES games I ended up picking up on the last day of the expo.

Koudelka (PS1) - An RPG with a survival horror influence? Sign me up! This game has been on my wishlist for quite a while, so I was glad to finally come across it.

Demon's Crest (SNES) - As a fan of action-platformers, I've been sleeping on this one, but I know there's a few fans of it here on the forum.

The Red Star (PS2) - A fun mix between beat 'em up and shoot 'em up mechanics and has couch co-op. I've been interested in this one for a while, but never spotted it before.

Daytona USA (SAT) - An arcade classic, used to play this at my buddy's house, so it's been fun to revisit. I'm missing some more common Saturn games, so I was glad to see a vendor with only Saturn stuff.

Virtua Fighter 2 (SAT) - Another great one for the Saturn. I really do love the mechanics in this game, and had a good time recently playing through the single player mode.

Jurassic Park (GEN) - Gameplay's a bit rough, but my cousins and I used to play this growing up. Over the years, that copy disappeared, so I decided to grab it when I saw a really good condition copy.

Arkanoid: Doh It Again (SNES) - Very late release SNES game. I didn't know about this one until a few years ago. Fun pick up and play title.

Street Fighter II Turbo: Hyper Fighting (SNES) - Another common game that somehow I didn't own! One vendor had a few copies available.

Congratulations on the Koudelka pick up! I know that is not a cheap game...

It is a very unique and enjoyable game. I am glad to see that so many people are beginning to experience it lately. If you enjoy it, check out the Shadow Hearts series on the PS2 as Koudelka is kind of like a spiritual predecessor to that series.

Also, love the Arkanoid and Street Fighter II pick ups. Both are good and solid titles.

Koudelka is basically a prequel to what became the Shadow Hearts series, if I remember correctly. It has been on my list to get at some point too. Lovely pick ups!

The Red Star is also an awesome game!

Koudelka was definitely my big pick-up at the expo this year! I've read a lot of good things about the first Shadow Hearts game, it's on my wishlist too. Missed my chance to grab it a few times, but once I finish Koudelka, I'd like to get it.

Looking forward to playing some more Arkanoid too! I don't have many games in that genre on the SNES, so it's a nice addition for me.

Thanks, Ack! This should hold me over for the next few months.

Yeah, I believe you're correct about Koudelka, I read that it was a precursor to the series, which was one of my motivations for picking it up.

Glad to hear The Red Star has your seal of approval! I was really impressed by the level that I played. Hopefully can convince my girlfriend to play co-op with me at some point. Lol.

Yeah…The Red Star absolutely rocks. It is a retro gamer’s dream come true, and I’m kind of surprised it’s never been remastered or rereleased. It’s like something leak Treasure would have made, and I loved it.

……

So, recently, I picked up Galaxy Force and Montezuma’s Revenge for the Sega Master System. To say that the Master System didn’t have a lot of third-party support would be an understatement, but it did get a little support from Activision and <checks notes >…ahem…Parker Brothers. With these most recent acquisitions, I now have every third-party game released for the system, and I am only nine games (and four imports) away from a complete North American set!

In case anyone’s interested, here’s a list of the third-party games for the Sega Master System:
Bomber Raid (Activision)
Cyborg Hunter (Activision)
Galaxy Force (Activision)
Montezuma’s Revenge (Parker Bros)
Rampage (Activision)
RC Gran Prix (Seismic)
Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego? (Parker Bros)
Here are the games I need to wrap up my set:
Aerial Assault
Alf
Dick Tracy
E-SWAT
Ghouls 'n Ghosts
James “Buster” Douglas Boxing
Michael Jackson's Moonwalker
Power Strike
Super Monaco GP

Golden Axe Warrior (Import)
Sonic the Hedgehog (Import)
Spider-Man (Import)
Strider (Import)
Absent a lotto win, I don’t think James “Buster” Douglas Boxing is probably happening, but you never know!

Why do you need imports to complete a North American release set? Are those Canada/Mexico only or something?

The games were released in NA, but for those releases, Sega just imported some copies from Europe and slapped a new UPC sticker on them. Copies with the UPC sticker are frequently MUCH more expensive than the imports, and while I’m a pretty crazy collector, I’m not so crazy that I’m willing to pay 100s of dollars for a UPC sticker! Accordingly, I’m just going to import copies of those games.

Wasn't that the deal with Sonic 1 for the Master System?

Or was it Sonic 2?

Either way, the price jumped because of a fucking sticker?

Yep. That’s the rarest one. It is extremely common in Europe, however, and the European version’s exactly the same except for the sticker.
