My wife is one hell of a gamer, she just doesn't see any point in posting in here when she can just have me post for her. Ha! But seriously, you know how they say opposites attract? My wife and me are living examples when it comes to gaming as we can have a knockdown drag out fight over who made the better system (Nintendo vs. Sega) any day of the week! The NES, SNES, N64, Gamecube, and Wii we have all belonged to her originally while I brought the entire Sega hardware catalog with me. The Sony stuff is kinda split even so I guess that's middle ground and as far as actual hands on gaming goes, one of the reasons I love my wife is because she is one of only a few people I've actually met who can take me to task at just about any of the 2D fighting games on market right now.

I've tried looking for girl gamer forums and websites, but I've found none that focus or even discuss retro stuff... plus, the most I've found are either very disorganized (been kinda spoiled here) or they are "Lesbian Gamers" sites that are thinly disguised feminist missionaries...

I also know I'm not well known on here as female or anybody, since I don't talk much about retrogaming. I like what I like, and if something good comes along or if I find something great I appreciate it (just like with books or movies). Incidentally I'm known amongst the females in my (or rather, the local groups) as the "gamer girl" even though there's so much more to me than that. I don't really prefer titles, anyway.

So you've got the inside scoop. Tell us, what the hell is wrong with women? Why can't they appreciate these things? Really, what is the mental boundary they cant get past? I really would like to think there isn't one, and there's some other explanation for it. I really do think the sexes are equal in mind.

On the other hand, I've read the theories about how men like videogames because it appeals to our primal nature to control things, and I just don't buy that shit. I know that I'm the exact opposite in life. I hate control and power. I'm much more comfortable taking orders. I don't like making decisions. Moving a few colors on a screen doesn't quench a vicious thirst for conquest. I'm just having fun. I feel like my time is better spent on a game than it is just observing a television show.

Have you had any success getting your girlfriends into games? Being a girl, do they take your word with more merit, or is it a lost cause as well? I can say that of the 16 or so years I grew up with my sisters, I was only able to get them into a select few games, and they still got bored with them extremely fast. Stuff like Mario 3, Kirby's Adventure, and the GBA Metroids. That was it. You would think those would be good gateways, but they just wouldn't pass on through the arches. Outside of the persuasive power of a bloodline, I've had zero success in converting. Around here, when girls find out you play video games, you take an automatic 50 point reduction in their "Men who can please me" sheet.

I've heard the argument (read articles) before how girls literally can't get into gaming because of our brains... specifically there's this "stuff" that makes girls bad at comprehending a 3D virtual world... it was like reading an argument on why women can't drive or be boy scouts (in fact, this was used as PRECEDENCE!!) *Scientists* have proven this. I think that women are just 1/2 of the problem- the other being the overall encouragment that girls don't need to be too varied in their interests. Girl Scouts can suck my butt.

I grew up pretty differently from most girls I've ever known, so as far as the "inside scoop" goes, I'm not any more qualified to say, "Well, girls don't like games because it doesn't reflect their interests," or "Girls need a more emotional experience." I've never had much trouble placing myself in other people's shoes, so it doesn't make a real difference to me- I learned to suspend my disbelief a long time ago.

And as for convincing other girls to play more, it usually boils down to this:
"Hey, you should try this, it's fun."
"No, thanks. I'm too insecure to start something new."

So we seem to agree then that our minds are equal. Again, to conflict studies' claims like you mentioned, I'm a guy, and I can't drive for shit. I make mistakes all the time. I mean, I've yet to get into a wreck at age 24, but I'm nervous as fuck, not confident at all behind the wheel. I also can't navigate. I get lost on my way to a new job almost every fucking time, even when I print out clear instructions. It's probably why I don't like Grand Theft Auto.

Yeah, that's why I've more often than not tried the retro route, but still failed. I figured these old games are what I grew up with from day 1, and there's no big tittied obnoxious heroins here. It's safe ground. But I guess girls can't enjoy the pixels and sprites or something. I don't know.

I think girls are more often than not, raised horribly wrong. They're set to standards that are unrealistic, and never given the freedom of choice in anything. Boys are always told to just go outside and play, but girls are imprisoned with little room to expand. Ideals are injected into their heads.

Is it too offensive for me to assume that MMOs are popular with women because they're mostly just chat rooms? And Final Fantasy is popular because of the the "emotional experience"? (Personally, I think the stories in those games are terrible and don't see how anyone could get emotional over them). Do women like Popcap games because they require zero pressure, commitment, or focus? Same goes for rhythm games.

So what if most men score a little better than most women at visual spatial tasks? That doesn't mean ALL women are worse than ALL men at visual spatial tasks, and when you compare any given woman to any given man, the woman might just turn out to do better at the task at hand. The only way to know is to actually test. You can't assume. Heck, women tend to be shorter and less strong than men, but that doesn't mean they aren't allowed to become construction workers. Fewer challenge themselves to do so and too few men are willing to let them, but I don't think it should serve as a roadblock. Rather, it's the men and women themselves and how they act that serve as the roadblock.

Let's face it, men and women ARE biologically different. The differences are generally minor but we shouldn't pretend they don't exist. On the other hand, we shouldn't shoehorn each other into particular roles because of those differences because, again, those differences are generally minor. People should try hard to succeed at whatever they want and not consider limitations unless they are simply insurmountable. This goes for jobs, hobbies, whatever.

I think the difference is purely social. How many girls love sports? Not as many as men but more than 50 years ago.

It has been pointed, and I agree, that girls are less prone to competition socially so that's why there are less women in sports or gaming in general. Most girls I know like games but they do not like hard games (even if they have never tried them) nor engage in friendly Galaga-score matches like I do with my male friends.
