my hot take is that half life 1 is mediocre at best

sorry that's just how i feel after playing the game for 7 hours waiting for it to get good

also enemy's do way to much damage and I'm on normal mode

if you enjoy it you must see something in it i don't

but i played half life 2 recently and OH MY GOD its amazing

fixed every issue i had with HL1

I think the issue with playing Half-Life 1 for the first time in 2025 is it is pretty much the video game equivalent of the "Seinfeld is Unfunny" trope: https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/ ... dIsUnfunny

A lot of innovation that brought HL1 acclaim upon release has been adopted and done to death since then.

well for me the main issue was that i found the levels to be confusing to navigate and enemy's did to much damage.
i was spending more time dyeing and getting lost than playing the game.

also the story did not really grab me.

but i can still defiantly see how it must have been amazing for the time.

for intense when i first played it i was impressed that the whole game did not have traditional cut scenes and that you can move and look around whale they happen.

i don't think its a horrible game just kind of meh

It's been a while since the release of a lot of great games, and in that time other games have iterated on the model and ultimately done better. I strongly dislike Mario 64 and Ocarina of Time, largely because I didn't play them at release and only game to that style of play much later on games that do it much better. So of course I'm going to find those experiences rough. Same for Half Life 1. We game in a post-HL1 gaming landscape. Sometimes it's hard to go back if you didn't play it at the time.

The PS2 is overrated. I'm not saying it's bad. I'm just saying it's not as amazing as the internet makes it out to be.

It has a lot of games, so there's something for pretty much everyone, and if you were used to the PS1 controller, the PS2 controller was easy to adapt to, but yeah, there are definite issues. It wasn't the best graphics of its generation, and there were some definite hardware issues. Also, going back to it, games feel really dark on it for some reason.

But I still have a massive PS2 library...

Not sure what "hot take" really encompasses in current slang, but have a look at this thread, with the most recent replies being not being just from last December.

Yeah, I figured that's what hot take had been reduced to. It used to have more nuance. A hot take was something that challenged the norm, but wasn't necessarily unpopular. It inspired debate, so not just a synonym for unpopular opinion. Guess language changes.

There's 7k posts there, so I don't expect you to read them all. Might be nice to see some fresh unpopular opinions.
