I love that game. I 100%'d it.Flak Beard wrote:All this talk about the Gamecube made me want to hook mine up again this weekend. I went out looking for a new game on the cosole and ended up getting Mega Man Network Transmission for $2.99 at GameStop in excellent condition. It's a pretty solid game thus far.
Just how awesome was the Gamecube?

Re: Just how bad was the Gamecube?
Fail. Just wanted to get that out of the way first.I certainly think other than Mario Galaxy, the Gamecube...
The Gamecube is my 2nd favorite console, behind the Dreamcast. It's got a ton of great exclusives, is a more powerful system than the PS2, and has compact stylishness like the PC-Engine. The reason the gamecube failed is simple; every generation has a defining genre. The genre that is excessively exploited throughout the entire generation. For the 1st and 2nd generations, it was any sort of arcade game; things weren't really well-defined into genres yet. The 3rd was platformers, 4th was Fighters, 5th was RPGs [Thank God for that], and 6th was First Person Shooters. Just in case you were wondering, this generation is for rhythm games. Anyway, the gamecube was not as well suited for FPSs, a lack of respectable online support was what probably what alienated the poor little cube. Although it didn't fit in very well with the flavor of the month genre, it got a great number of highly original and genuinely fun titles, unlike the Xbox and PS2, who were touted mainly for technical demonstrations. The Gamecube was meant to remind us that games were fun, where in which, was its unfortunate failing. Rest in peace, Gamecube.

Super Mario Sunshine
RE4
All the RE remakes re-releases
Metroid Prime 2
Mario Kart
Metal Gear Solid Twin Snakes
F-Zero
Alien Hominid
Now even those few games were worth the cheap price of admission in the later days of the Gamecubes life.
Older. Not wiser.
Re: Just how bad was the Gamecube?
I loved the Gamecube, but the controller was a problem for some games. Specifically, fighters. If for no other reason, I couldn't live off of the Gamecube due to the lack of fighting games for it.
Other than that, though, the Gamecube was great. I especially loved the Game Boy Player - even with a DS, I much prefer to play GBA games on the Gamecube.
I wish I could have gotten my hands on the SNES controller for the Gamecube in Japan. GBA games are already so SNES-style, it would have made the illusion that much more complete.

Really? I thought the Gamecube controller was great for fighting games. The Analog stick was the most like a joystick, with corners for rough-but-percise movements, similar to the Neo-Geo pocket.the7k wrote:I loved the Gamecube, but the controller was a problem for some games. Re: Just how bad was the Gamecube?
The button placement is what got me. Sure, an overly large A button might be great for other genres, but fighters use lots of buttons a lot more often. I wouldn't want to play a Capcom fighter using it.lisalover1 wrote:Really? I thought the Gamecube controller was great for fighting games. Yeah, as Ack said, the buttons were a big issue. Also, unless I have a real joystick, I'll use the d-pad, and the GCN's d-pad left a lot to be desired.
Playing Capcom vs SNK 2 on it was a chore, to be honest. The controller was great for shooters like Alien Hominid and Ikaruga, but 2D fighters really had a lot of problems with it. (I did enjoy Soul Calibur 2 on the GCN, though.)

These days my Gamecube with Gameboy Player is my absolute favorite console. When you think about the combined libaries of Gamecube, GBA, GBC and Gameboy, it's really an amazing little box.
