Re: Random Thoughts Thread
Fantasy Football is like picking stocks. You look at data, make some choices, then discover that unexpected things happen that throw all your analysis out the window.

Re: Random Thoughts Thread
20+ years ago when fantasy football was a relatively new thing, the management at the paint & body shop my brother worked at decided to hold one for a big cash prize - $4K or something when everybody bought in, they were betting wages. Since neither of us were at all into televised sports, I told my brother I'd figure out the winners for a cut of the profits if he won.
I loaded up the stats from the last three years from the sport-geek websites into an excel spreadsheet, and gave him the winners.
If the websites were up-to-date to include the one player's broken hand two weeks prior, he would have won. It took 1/2 an hour to compile the stats.
Now, there are websites that have this information real-time with a couple of clicks. it's basically betting on horse racing.

Re: Random Thoughts Thread
Does anyone happen to have any recommendations for Dreamcast SD serial expansion modules these days?
I meant to pick one up some time ago to offload some saves and things, like DLC quests for PSO v2, but never actually pulled the trigger. Not really sure what might be out there now that (hopefully) isn't just cheap junk.

VMU2 is reviewing well and apparently is finally seeing a wider release, but also has sold out (though I suspect it will be returning again).pierrot wrote: ↑Tue Sep 03, 2024 9:21 pm Does anyone happen to have any recommendations for Dreamcast SD serial expansion modules these days?

Re: Random Thoughts Thread
I just realized I posted in Random Thoughts and not Random Gaming Thoughts.
Anyway, the VM2 seems interesting, but it's pretty expensive, especially when I only really care about a subset of its features. Reading some of the impressions from people who funded it, it also sounds like it's kind of clunky to use.
I saw some mention of 8bitmods working on a Memcard Pro for the Dreamcast, which might be considerably less expensive, at least.
Still, I'm really only looking for a Dreamshell compatible serial port adapter for swapping out and backing up VMU data. I just recall the last time I was looking for such a thing, the 'reputable' devices seemed to be long out of production. Might just have to roll the dice on Ebay, I guess.

Re: Random Thoughts Thread
I'm looking forward to the 8BitMods DC offering, whenever it's released. In regards to backing up data using their other memory cards, both the PS1 and GC memory cards have wifi capability and you can back-up saves off the card over your network. Alternatively, you can pop the SD card into your computer and back it up from there.
Re: Random Thoughts Thread
That's nuts. I didn't know they had wi-fi capabilities. I kind of don't know if I actually want that--.
I ended up grabbing a serial SD adapter from Kaico on their website. It was on sale, so even with conversion from pounds, and shipping, it was one of the least expensive options. I imagine it's still just the same item out of bulk lots from alliexpress, or something, but it was the outlet I was most comfortable with.

Are you telling me the method from the movie "Moneyball" works?Anapan wrote: ↑Sun Sep 01, 2024 6:14 am 20+ years ago when fantasy football was a relatively new thing, the management at the paint & body shop my brother worked at decided to hold one for a big cash prize - $4K or something when everybody bought in, they were betting wages. Lets assume you got the stats, how you figured which team would win? based on which team had the higher stats players?
Re: Random Thoughts Thread
Uh...yeah. Moneyball not only works, it's how baseball has been running for the last twenty years. In fact, it's so prevalent, we now have counter anti-analytics arguments about how it has been a detriment to the sport.
Re: Random Thoughts Thread
Ya, just that simple. No thought. Put stats in, get winning picks. Would've won if either of us followed the game. I recall i consulted some forums for predictions after the spreadsheet spit out stats. My bro took those into account. Still only 1/2 hour to best 8 other participants that followed every game closely and took every result personally.
