I didn't watch Ghostbusters until I was an adult and haven't seen the first one in years. So I'm assuming my love for Afterlife and Frozen Kingdom isn't affected by nostalgia.

Honestly, that might have been why you were able to enjoy them, though, to be fair, I didn't think Afterlife was that bad.

You were able to just enjoy the movie for what it was without having your vision obstructed from rolling your eyes so much at all the call-backs, references, fan service, and wistful looks.

Yeah, that's what it tried to do, and it wasn't just fan service, but it's kind of like they set up the movie for the fan service to be integral to the plot, which was kind of clever, but wasn't quite clever enough to not be annoying. A huge plot point was people expressing how amazing and important all three (ha!) of the in-universe fictional installments of Matrix media were to them.

One of the reviewers said this about the movie:

"The thing that carries The Matrix Resurrections through some of those rough patches instead is Wachowski's obvious affection for the characters, and the actors' reciprocal love for this world and its endless intellectual curiosities."

This quote really rings true for me in the context of the film, even if I didn't particularly enjoy the final product, outside of one particular action sequence.

I think I said it before, but I'll take the widely-hated 2016 Ghostbusters over either of the way-too-late sequels. I did feel like that one leaned a little to heavily on the whole "girl power" aspect, but it did its own thing and a lot of great comedic performances. I genuinely believe that it if wasn't called "Ghostbusters" people would have really enjoyed it for what it was.

I haven't seen the new ones, so I can't comment on them either, but I can agree with this. I thought there were aspects of it that were genuinely hilarious, like Chris Hemsworth's performance, and I always enjoy Kristen Wiig and Kate McKinnon pretty much every time I see them. My biggest complaint was that the CG felt cartoonish, but truth be told, that's a complaint I have about nearly all CG-heavy films at this point.

I got a Peacock subscription to watch the Olympics, and I’m canceling it at the end of the month. Accordingly, I’m watching all of its unique movies before my subscription runs out. (Abigail is also on there, and it is so much fun.)

My wife took me on a date to see Deadpool 3 yesterday (lemme tell ya, babysitting costs make movies REALLY expensive). I thoroughly enjoyed it. The movie was not just a bunch of repeat jokes and did some fun subversions with cameos. It wasn’t until the “memorial” sequence, as I like to think of it, during the credits that I realized what this movie actually is.

It’s a love letter to all the “other” Marvel movies. The end credits sequence that plays beside the credits for a bit is scenes and behind-the-scenes footage from all the Fantastic 4 and X-Men movies, and even a little Blade, even ones from which there were no cameo characters. It was a memorial for the non-MCU Marvel movies. It was actually quite touching.

Also noticed a couple jokes in the credits, like:

Turns out Ryan’s 4 year old just loves Hugh to death and tries to physically maul him every chance she gets.
