I wonder whether retailers will even bother to promote a console that seems specifically designed to lose them money. Even if they did choose to stock it, i can imagine them promoting nintendo or microsoft more if they have hard copies of games, because they'll be making the shops significantly more revenue.

The thing though, is this is exactly what digital distribution is there to kill: The second hand market. I think most casual people buy game systems at Walmart/Target/Best Buy anyway, and they dont stand to lose the huge used game market. Also, remember, there will always be people who wont use credit cards so retail stores will sell things like Wii points cards, and stuff like that. The only thing I look forward to with the digital distribution revolution is the death of gamestop. If the modern second hand market dies out for them, maybe they will go funcolandish and start selling retro stuff. That would be awesome.

Here at GS most managers tend to look at me like a retarded ass when I tell them this due to GS refusing to realise that it's business model will be it's own undoing.

Well, the used business model will eventually do them in... and if that doesnt, eventually the mostly bad experience people have going there. There are two out of about ten gamestops near me that I can go in and actually expect the employees to know anything. The managers there and above are looking at current sales and profits and what they can do to improve them.. They have no clue or desire to look ahead for what is inevitably going to happen down the line. But the same can be said about most corporations.. They are mostly all about NOW, as they are responsible for pleasing shareholders who have no intention to hold onto the stocks longterm.

This is exactly why I'm jumping ship as soon as a Play N' Trade, Player's Choice, or good game store comes to town.

But yeah, it's just kind of sad to see how far GS has fallen from where it used to be during the 90's and early 00's in the hearts and minds of gamers.

People think I'm retarded when I say that buying used games is no better than pirating them. I then spell it out to them but somehow I'm a bad person for pirating the odd game. I don't buy used games for current consoles any more. I buy games from developers that deserve to get my money, I'm definitely not going to wait until it gets traded in so I can save a couple of quid just so that GS/Game can make money from reselling games.

I honestly don't see any difference between reselling games and piracy. As far as the games industry is concerned they aren't making money from piracy and they aren't making money from used game sales.

I agree with you fully on this point. The whole reason piracy hurts the industry is that people then don't give money to the publisher. Hell, in a way buying used is worse, since not only are you not giving money to the publisher, but you are contributing to an industry that has a business model around milking every last dollar out of fickle people who play a game once and then sell it back.

Really, the only benefits to buying a used game is having the actual physical media for easy play on the original hardware. And the cool art and whatnot.

"Looks like the PSP is getting yet another full download-only game."

Fate/Unlimited Codes comes to US as a download exclusive. LINK

So, there you have it. Already we're seeing the trend increase. I really feel torn about this situation. Give more money, or learn to deal with it. Obviously, I could import and have a physical copy and at the same time send a message to Sony that I'm not interested in download exclusives, however, this usually includes excess costs.
It's a lame situation.

Personally, I'd just pirate, out of spite.

What option have you got? Either that or just boycott Sony and their products which I think is probably a better and more legal option.

I couldnt agree more that buying used games is no better than pirating. Only problem is that one is illegal and one is not. Personally I would rather pirate than give money to a certain store, but occasionally I give in and pick up some xbox or cube games when I see something I want
