Re: PS2 Mod Chip Best One
I highly recommend a softmod solution, such as Swapmagic or exploit/loader combo instead. It's much easier. Also, HDLoader can be far more convienient than a bunch of DVDs. Good luck, though, if you're really set on a modchip.

As long as you don't have a 9xxx model, freevast is the cheapiest and easiest solution

Is there anyting that will boot backups without swapping disc?

Call me a fool, but could you explain more of what Feevast is?

It's basically a memory card with an elf file that exploits a security hole during the PS2s boot sequence. Pretty sure you need a modded PS2 to create the memory card though, I haven't paid attention to the PS2 scene for quite some time so I could be wrong on that.

Probably the easiest way is to get something that gives you access to files on a USB drive. I have Gameshark2 for that purpose; I know that Codebreaker and Action Replay also work.

I'm pretty sure you do too, but there are people willing to make the memory card for you as long as you provide the memory card and cover shipping cost.

I have HDLoader, and I'm not liking it as much as I thought I would. First off, you can play backups with it but every time you wanna put a new game on it you have to take it out of the PS2 and hook it up to a computer, load the ISO(s) onto the drive, then replace the drive in the PS2. Doesn't sound that bad but gets old fast.
Also, you have to consider the size of the drive. My biggest spare drive that I didn't mind devoting to the PS2 is 80GB, which can be filled up rather quickly with PS2 games. Then, once filled, there's the annoyance of having to delete a game off the drive to put a new one on. I guess you can buy a bigger drive, but I didn't want to, and the fact that IDE drives are kinda expensive now in my opinion.
All that being said, I would much rather have a mod chip for my PS2. I would much rather just be able to burn a game to disc and then be done with it forever. In fact, I might eventually get one, and you might eventually see my HDLoader up on the forum for sale lol.
Re: PS2 Mod Chip Best One
I don't know why you are taking the drive out of the PS2 every time you want to install a game...
I just pop a game in the drive and click install from the HDloader interface. Are you using 8.0c?
You can also install over a network from a windows PC. You can do it with normal ethernet cables and a router or you can connect the PS2 directly to your PC with a crossover cable and do it that way. Either method works fine.
There's no need to faff around removing the drive and plugging it into your computer, that's just dumb.
Also, you can buy 500GB hard drives in this country for under £40... Hell, you can get 1TB drives for less than £65 in some places. That's definitely less than the cost of a mod chip and some DVD-Rs. The Network Adaptor might cost you quite a bit if you don't already have one though.

I was talking about games that I download. I can't very well burn them to a disc and have HDLoader rip it to the drive, at least I can't with out a mod chip or swap magic tool.

Yes but I read that this method takes a LONG time to transfer games.

I wouldn't say so, if you take what I said above into account. No need to call me dumb

SATA drives are pretty cheap here, in the USA, but I find IDE drives to be pretty expensive. A 500GB drive can be any where from $60-80 unless I get them off eBay (which is one of the few things I DON'T like getting from eBay). A mod chip would cost me less than a 500GB IDE drive. DVD-R's are pretty cheap though and I always have a lot on hand. I just recently got a 100 pack of Verbatim for under $20.
