So just out of curiosity, are physical PC games still a thing? I mean REAL physical releases, not Steam codes in a box.
Re: Games Acquired 2023
I think I've seen physical PC games at Walmart. Mostly casual games in jewel cases.

Re: Games Acquired 2023
December will be very slow until the end of the month. Still, I can’t resist a deal, and I’m happy to add two more games to my PSP collection. I also read that The Hong Kong Massacre is good, in a Hotline Miami sort of way, and I was able to get it for only $0.99 in the eShop.

I still pick up DRM free (often come with steam codes too) copies on disc of indie point and click adventure games. They are pretty much the only modern PC games I collect, though they are far and few between.Raging Justice wrote:So just out of curiosity, are physical PC games still a thing? Amazon is FINALLY shipping my copy of Super Bomberman R 2 for Switch. It'll be here Monday, after I ordered it...

That's kind of what I thought. It seems like PC gaming has mostly moved on from physical. I guess indies are the only ones who still care enough to support it.emwearz wrote:I still pick up DRM free (often come with steam codes too) copies on disc of indie point and click adventure games. Sea of Stars seems to be getting two physical releases. The one available now is the Asian one. It's pretty sweet. It's a standard release but feels a bit like a collector's edition. I got mine in the mail today but haven't had a chance to open it. Here's some stock photos though of everything that it comes with it from an online ebay listing:

The game is worth playing, especially for fans of The Messenger, though reviews have inflated how great the game actually is though. I do wonder what the reaction will be now to Jirard The Completionist's cameo in the game given the mess he's currently in.

The DRM-free DVD-ROM in a case era is dead. IndieBox is kind cool. Some VNs are still released physically. I got Majikoi in a big box.Raging Justice wrote:That's kind of what I thought. Re: Games Acquired 2023
Personally, I don't really miss having to buy PC games physically. My first laptop, a graduation present back in '04, was low-end for its time so 99% of the time anything after '02/'03 had no chance of running. But by the time we got high-speed internet and I discovered that there were ways of scoring games my glorified potato could run, buying games lost all of its appeal. I don't think I really began buying games digitally until buying an even better laptop in 2012. It was still low-end for its time but thankfully it'd serve me well and do so better than my previous laptop. By that point, however, digital distribution was gaining even greater ground than ever.
And now, the only way I'll buy a game physically is if it's an import (providing it features an English option), it's out of print or if it's a Switch game that's considerably too large to install completely onto a microSD card. Well, except for a handful of PS4 games that to date have either been replaced with a digital copy (like with RE7), will be at some point (Cyberpunk 2077) or has a decent Switch port I'll replace it with (Dragon Quest Builders).
In fact, aside from that, I only resort to buying physical media for films and certain books (anything from Bitmap Books, Junji Ito hardback collections, out of print books and anything that catches my eye at a bookstore, thrift store, garage sale or Dollar Tree).

Re: Games Acquired 2023
I have never had a huge interest in PC gaming aside from an occasional game here and there. Knowing that physical is essentially dead in PC Land further cements my lack of interest. The so called "Master Race" sure didn't hesitate to accept an all digital future it seems. I know many console gamers still enjoy physical collecting (as evidenced by this thread).
If I ever want to try a really cool PC exclusive I will just get it on GOG so I can go DRM free and I'll try and get it on sale since I don't want to pay all that much for digital only games.
