Agreed. Awesome, really fun film with an amazing soundtrack. The soundtrack album is, probably, the best parody album of the ‘00s.PretentiousHipster wrote:Josie and the Pussycats was a huge surprise. I have no idea why it's marketed towards kids when it came out. It's honestly closer to fight club and they live with how the plots are, just girl power instead. Fantastic satire that is so unsubtle that combining that with its absurdist nature complements each other very well. Really fantastic humour in this. I knew it was gonna be insane and not what I expected just from the opening scene.

Definitely watch They Live next. It's one great. I prefer it better than Little China or Escape from NY for sure.Raging Justice wrote:So I've seen four Carpenter movies now. This movie, Big Trouble in Little China, The Thing, and Escape from New York. Maybe I'll see They Live next. I don't think I've ever actually watched it, but I've seen and heard so much about it over the years that I can't say I'll be going into it spoiler free. Oh well
Also, these movies would have made excellent 90s video games. It's a shame we didn't get more of these made by legit companies. Guess we'll have to suffice with influence instead.

Was the golden child a ripoff of big trouble in little china? Same release year, a few same actors, similar plot. Although big trouble has some corny ass dialogue at times. Some of the lines just seem so stupid and random like a 12 year old wrote it. Still one of my favorites though. "Gracie Law, what the hell is she doing here"? I don't know dude, you're a fucking restaurant, maybe she's hungry. Just dumb ass lines scattered in that movie.

Nah, not a rip off, just part of a movement that was going on at the time in cinema.stickem wrote:Was the golden child a ripoff of big trouble in little china? I guess, i thought i read somewhere there was a race to get each to the box office first being so similar. Kurt russell must have last his ass off at some if his lines. Corny is an understatement.

Last weekend, a few friends and I got together at a buddy's place to watch Arena, a 1989 sci-fi film about a human who has to box against aliens in an arena fighting tournament. It was a pretty funny and overall entertaining movie. Many of the alien characters reminded me of something you would've seen hanging out in the Mos Eisley Cantina in Star Wars.
On Friday night, I went out to the theaters (something I hadn't done in quite a long time!) to see Godzilla Minus One. I've only seen a few of the Godzilla movies, and don't know much about the lore unlike two of my friends who I watched it with, who are much more familiar with the franchise. The movie was awesome! It had an interesting plot and some great action sequences as well. One of the better movies I've seen in a long time. I kinda want to go see it in the theaters again!

Dude, I love Arena!
I'm so glad to hear Godzilla Minus One is worthwhile. I'm a fan of the franchise and have seen a lot of the movies, but it's always nice to have more to enjoy.

Arena was a lot of fun! Love the bartender character, Shorty. Lol. My friend, whose main hobby is collecting and watching movies, just got a newly released blu-ray boxset from Arrow Video that included Arena and wanted to watch it again. Maybe you're already aware of the new blu-ray release, but figured I'd mention it, in case it's something you're interested in!
I think you'll enjoy Godzilla Minus One! I don't want to spoil anything so I'm not going to go into any details, but everyone I watched it with came away impressed.

Re: What was the last movie you've seen?
I agree that Godzilla Minus One is a good time. The human story is pretty good which is a nice change from most Godzilla movies, but the amazing thing is how good this movie looks on a 15 million budget. It really makes you wonder what the point is of all these bloated 200-300 million dollar movies that don't even look as good. I recently saw 2019's Godzilla: King of the Monsters and I thought it was pretty good as far as these things go, but I never felt scared the way I did watching Godzilla Minus One. They really managed to give Godzilla a real presence and heft. The visuals and sound make it seem like he is really there which I feel is a rarity for most fx heavy films these days.
In other news, earlier this year I saw the Bollywood movie Pathaan and last month I watched Tiger 3. I liked Pathaan a lot and I thought Tiger 3 might star the same guy in the lead role. It doesn't but there is an amazing scene in Tiger 3 where Pathaan shows up. So much fun. Apparently these films are part of something called the YRF Spy Universe. The fx are not as good as you see in the James Bond and Mission: Impossible movies, but they're pretty fun and they're coming out at a faster clip than those movies. Pathaan is on Amazon Prime along with a lot of other Bollywood movies.

I don't know a lot about Godzilla, but I think kaijus are cool and I have enjoyed things like Pacific Rim and Power Rangers. So I could definitely enjoy a Godzilla movie and everyone is raving about this new one.
I've watched a lot of movies this year but I have been on a bit of a dry spell for a few weeks now. Need to watch something new soon. If I can get out to a theater Godzilla could be just the fix I need.
