Yeah, that's the confusing part. They made The Second Encounter, which at the time we thought was 2, because it's the same size as the first. Then they made an actual 2, and it had a mixed reception (and the devs don't seem to be fans of it). It makes several tonal changes and level design changes that just didn't land very well. Right now the consensus seems to be that Second Encounter is the second game, III: BFE is the third game, and the game labeled "2" no longer exists.

eeekk...there is a 2? I am playing Second Encounter. I thought is was officially "2". Apologies for the confusion
No worries, it confuses even those of us who are fans of the series.

I've been reading through the Digital Press fanzines, starting from the early 90s. It's been interesting to read about their perspectives on games that were new at the time and their predictions for upcoming games. Also, I've really enjoyed the "Closet Classics" section, which is basically their write ups on sleeper hits.

Just curious, has anyone else here read through these? If so, any favorite sections or issues? Or any other good gaming related fanzines I should check out?

I am a sucker for old magazines. Really gives you a clear look on the mentality of the time.

Scans of the Digital Press fanzine have been archived on their website at the following link: http://www.digitpress.com/library/newsl ... italpress/.

I'm glad they're still online and available!

I got a whole bunch of fanzines from this one guy, but half of it was invective against Clinton or undying adulation for Reagan. I never bothered with unknown fanzines after that.

Digital Press was a bit different, though.

To whoever it is at Wayforward who designed the Run Run Rottytops section in Shantae and the Pirate's Curse, I hope there is a special place in hell waiting for you where you will be forced to replay this section of the game over and over again for enternity.

What is it with Playstation games having so many dumb, "you did a thing X number of times" trophies? Like seriously, what is the point of these damn things? Are you special just because you can do a repetitive task over and over again? Does a player deserve a trophy for pressing the jump button over a hundred times in a platform game? Is that like some incredible display of skill or effort? Oh my god, you fired your gun 200 times in this third person shooter! Have a trophy!

It's just so dumb. I get so sick of seeing these damn pointless trophies pop up constantly for literally doing nothing.

Trophies should be awarded for something that is a genuine accomplishment, not thrown at the player like candy for every pointless thing that they do.

Yeah, there's always lots of milestone trophies that you get just from doing mandatory things in the game. Or scripted events, etc. I suppose they make people feel good. There's usually very few trophies that are actual accomplishments. If that bugs you... Can't you t urn off trophies? Or at least the popup for them?

They were gaming fanzines with political topics thrown into the mix? That seems really weird. Sorry to hear you got stuck with those.

Paradox seems like an interesting gaming related fanzine as well, but there aren't many issues archived online. There's a few here though: http://www.paradoxfanzine.com/
