So now youtube is blocking access to their video player if you are using an ad blocker. It's okay though, I found a useful little app that gets around their bullshit. I'd also recommend alternatives like Odysee and Rumble.
Fuck youtube.

You're mad, but I'm sure going using another platform if you insist on using an ad blocker is exactly what Google wants you to do.Raging Justice wrote:So now youtube is blocking access to their video player if you are using an ad blocker. EDIT: I just checked and Rumble doesn't seem to have any of the people whose channels I follow regularly.

I've used Brave, a Chromium based browser, for years. It automatically blocks most ads, and supposedly trackers to boot. You don't even have to install any ad blocking extensions. I haven't had any issues with YouTube. Once in a great while I might get a YouTube ad, but that's only when I haven't closed my browser in days. All I have to do is restart it and invariably it updates the browser in a flash and blocks all the ads again. It even blocks ads on Twitter.

Re: Random Thoughts Thread
Brave is what I use, and I was still getting harassed by youtube. I'm not paying money for youtube premium just so that I don't have to get constant ads randomly playing during any video I watch. I have ZERO tolerance for ads ANYWHERE that I go online. I can't remember the last time I have even SEEN an ad on any website I go to because I have them all blocked.
Here's some solutions I have found that seem to work.
If you have ublock origin, clearing your cache and updating seems to help. You have to open a new tab though and go to youtube from there.
There's also an app out there called freetube that's better than youtube itself.

Re: Random Thoughts Thread
The way that youtube does ads is particularly offensive. It's one thing to just play them before and after a video, but having them randomly start playing at any time during a video is a jarring, startling, and obnoxious way to advertise to people.
Anyway, I solved the issue as stated in my previous post so I'm done ranting about it.

Yes, that is very annoying when you're watching something like instructions, tutorials, how-to's, etc. You often skip to try and locate the info you need and get stalled by an ad. It's super disruptive when you're in the middle of something. And yeah, I'm also not paying for Premium just for that.Raging Justice wrote:The way that youtube does ads is particularly offensive. I also block 100% of ads. I can remember a few years ago there was a bug with a FireFox update that made plugins not work. It was quickly resolved, but I remember thinking, "THIS is what the internet is like without an ad blocker?!" It wasn't good.
I don't just block ads because they're annoying. Especially the ones that are designed to be intrusive. I mean, that's a big reason why I block them. But there's also security concerns. There have been reports of rogue ads delivering malware or redirecting to phishing sites. So not only are they annoying but they create one more point of vulnerability for hackers to pounce on. No thanks.
I am actually using uBlock Origin on the PC. Now if only I can find an ad block that works as good on my cell phone.
Re: Random Thoughts Thread
The Android space has a lot of great browser-based blockers, though you often have to use something other than Chrome, since Google is making it harder these days to block ads since they are an ad company. Brave or Firefox are good for that. There are also blockers that can cover all internet traffic so in-app browsers will block stuff, but those sometimes require extra permissions to install, and many carriers don't give you system-level permissions on your own phone.Ziggy587 wrote:I am actually using uBlock Origin on the PC. On the iOS side only the VPN-style/Proxy-style blockers will work on general traffic, though some Apple services and apps will go around those (which is really annoying and potentially a security issue). There is robust support for browser blockers/filters, however. But they often fail for stuff like the Facebook site which makes the ads VERY hard to block, because Apple limits how complex your blocker can be.
Re: Random Thoughts Thread
Well I'm on iOS now. Norton has a separate Ad Blocker app for iOS, so I installed it, but it doesn't seem to block any ads in Safari. I've yet to look into it, or for alternatives.

If you use ublock origin, you can just filter out the pop up. If you really need a video, there's also youtube-dl.Raging Justice wrote:Brave is what I use, and I was still getting harassed by youtube. I believe that's by design. It's one of the many reasons I refuse to get an iPhone.Ziggy587 wrote:Well I'm on iOS now. Norton has a separate Ad Blocker app for iOS, so I installed it, but it doesn't seem to block any ads in Safari. I've yet to look into it, or for alternatives.
