If evolution is true, then there is no reason they can't do it if humans can. I think thats how it works...they evolve to be more advanced?!

Evolution is just change over time.

Organisms reproduce. At some point a mutation takes place. That mutation may or may not be propagated to offspring. A mutation that confers reproductive advantage is more likely to propagate than one that does not. It doesn't have to be "more advanced" as we would evaluate it.

Right. Dominant and recessive genes aside, you have to assume that most of the genes that get past on are from the ones that survived long enough to reproduce. Or were alive longer and thus reproduced more (so more of their genes are out there). That's what survival of the fittest is. But it happens over the eons, that's what most people fail to realize. Only the egocentric man thinks evolution has stopped because they cannot witness it. Man has only been around for thousands of years, which is nothing compared to millions or even BILLIONS of years. Imagine human life a MILLION or even a BILLION years from now. You know, assuming something doesn't destroy us (including ourselves). It might be unrecognizable. Or at least drastically different, and incompatible with today's man. But I digress into existential dread.

can we devolve? I thought evolution is mutation to better adapt to your environment making you more advanced for survival to your surroundings. is there any sign that past generation of any organism was more advanced than its descendants?

That's what survival of the fittest is. Those who are the most fit will survive (longer) and thus reproduce. Or at least, reproduce more than those less fit. Evolution is random mutations. Some good, some bad. Good in that you can survive longer, and pass on the genes of those mutations. Those that don't have those good mutations, or mutations that have a negative effect on survival, will not reproduce as much or at all. So over the eons, those "good" genes are the ones that are passed down the generations. Because they survived.

Unless you're talking about the Super Mario Bros. movie. Then you can de-evolve someone.

Or, if you spray paint a Super Scope black, it becomes a devolution gun.

Evolution isn't necessarily a push to greater complexity. It's merely a slow, piecemeal process of adaptation and survival. There are absolutely some creatures today which may be simpler in some regards than their ancestors.

Given a lot of things I've seen in recent years I think we as a human race actually ARE devolving.

I don't know, but that movie is awesome. If you've never seen it, you really should. Some people hated it because it wasn't really a MARIO movie. But take it for what it is, a bizarre adaptation of its source material. It's a good time.

Yes, I see it happening all around me.

Say what you want about the convenience of digital video, but nothing beats rewinding and forwarding on physical discs
