Listed as one of the hidden gems on the article today, I didn't even know this game had a Genesis port.

I'm a huge fan of this true gem.

I haven't tried the original version on Apple II, but had the game originally for the Amiga and later tried out the DOS version for nostalgia sake. From the screens I see in the Genesis, the graphics are comparable to the Amiga version (as opposed to the DOS version, which has less colors and worse sound - a shame, as the music is quite good). I can't comment on the music of the Genesis port, but clearly the lack of a mouse in that version leads me to say that of these 3 versions the Amiga is easily the best (according to wikipedia, there is a different level in the Genesis version, so I should try that one just to check that out).

If you are going to play this game (and you really should), then I urge you to give the Amiga version a try as well (heck, I should try to find the original version on the Apple II as well to compare).

I started with the DOS version on my 286.
Is the Amiga version that much better?

I haven't tried the Genesis version. If you have tried the Genesis and the DOS version you can probably see where I am going: Amiga has mouse support (BTW there is a decent emulator for it around) and graphics on par (or maybe better) than the Genesis version from what I saw on the screens. The DOS version has much less colours. The sound on the PC was cruddy as well, and IIRC the Genesis sound chips weren't that much good, whereas the Amiga was used to create electronic music back in the day AFAIK.

I would say yes, the Amiga version (and apparently the Apple IIgs version as well) are much better than the DOS version.
