What was the last movie you've seen?

Talk about just about anything else that is non-gaming here, but keep it clean

Ninja (2009)

Do you like cheesy action movies from the 80s and 90s with cheesy heroes and cheesy villains? Then you'll like this (even though it came out in 2009). So this is my first Scott Adkins film (the guy who plays the awesome villain from John Wick 4, who feels like that universe's version of the Penguin from Batman, if he knew martial arts and could kick ass). I think this may also be my first movie from director Isaac Florentine. These two apparently have quite a resume of action films I have never seen before now. The movie definitely lives up to its title. It's got ninjas, and they are about as stereotypical as you'd expect, and that's not a complaint. Hollywood/Video Game ninjas are awesome! You'll get your swords, shurikens, smoke bombs. nunchuks, etc. in this movie. Oh, and lots of blood and gore. A dude literally gets sliced in half at one point.

There's some fun shots with blood splashing onto the camera, overly dramatic deaths, and a little bit of melodrama, stuff that feels like a good B movie/grindhouse movie (though the production value in this movie is pretty solid).

The movie has tons of great action sequences and Adkins definitely has that action movie hero look. The plot isn't very deep, and some of the acting and dialog are cheesy as hell, but again, if you like those 80s/90s action movies, then none of this will bother you. A lot of that cheesiness makes the movie fun and I found myself laughing at some of the silliness more than once. The movie also has this sort of schizophrenic camera that's constantly zooming in and out on people and objects, mixed with lots of quick cuts. It gives the movie this hyperactive sort of feeling like the film is high on caffeine. It's fun and again, a bit cheesy at times...in a good way. It actually reminds me a bit of how Sam Raimi used to shoot some of his films.

It's a big, dumb, action movie in the best of ways. Here's a trailer, you'll know for sure by the end of watching it whether or not this is the type of movie you'll enjoy

If this looks like something up your alley, you can even watch it free on youtube. It's a quick watch at just an hour and a half

The Super Mario Bros. Movie (2023)

In short, it's better than Avatar, worse than Super Mario Bros. (1993).

In Long:

Remember Wreck-It Ralph? Remember how fun it was to see so many quick cameos from characters from video game history? It was a small, nice feature in a movie that had a lot of other great qualities.

If you take that feature from Wreck-It Ralph and limit your scope only to games featuring Mario, you have 95% of substance of The Super Mario Bros. Movie.

It's fine. Performances were good. The Peaches song was funny. I think they might have made it look like Princess Peach was farting around the 54 minute mark when she shows up on a motorcycle. Meh.

I think I've mentioned it before, but if you like Scott Adkins I recommend Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning. It is surprisingly good.

I'm a big fan of his film Avengement. It's another example of him getting to do some fascinating body transformation (scars, false teeth, etc.) while also showcasing his skills.

Terminator

I saw it ions ago but forgot everything. idk why but imo movies pre 2005 or so just had better taste to them, I guess they were more art than commercial product.

Are any of the sequels worth watching? I am not interested if its just more of the same thing to milk the franchise.
basically robot Michael Mayers but at time of release the idea of time travel robot and AI vs Humans was really interesting especially without computer SFX.

Arnold's human face mask is one of the worst make up sfx I have seen in professional films. Surprised they went along with it.

EDIT: looks like a lower budget movies at $6M according to wikipedia. So I guess kudos to them for the production overall. Compared to $48M for Tim Burton Batman 5 years later. Numbers off wikiepdia.

T2: Judgement Day is a masterpiece. Just know it's kind of a different beast.

Actually "different beast" is what I am looking for. Trilogy or something more/different to offer I can make up time for. More of the same, I rather experience something else. Will be watching thanks!

Yeah, after a second watch I wasn't too impressed by The Super Mario Bros. Movie. I think Wreck it Ralph and even Scott Pilgrim were both more fun, and the Sonic movies have a bit more substance to them despite also being kids movies. I actually think the Sonic movies are a bit more clever in how they use the video game references than The Super Mario Bros. Movie.

I really think more screen time for Mario with his brother Luigi would have made the movie better. I really like how the movie portrays Luigi. The only times the movie ever seems to have any real heart to it are the scenes with him and Mario, but sadly they were clearly more interested in shoving Peach onscreen at every opportunity. There's a story floating around the internet that she actually was the main focus of the movie until Nintendo stepped in and had them make some changes. Even so, you can still tell that the makers of the film were obsessed with her.

I'm gonna check out both of those movies. I remember seeing the first Universal Soldier and I'm a Van Damme fan so that should be fun

Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning is one of the greatest films ever made imo, but an action fan might not be the biggest fan of it as it's a deconstruction of an action film through a horror lens.

I'm okay with that. It's actually good that I know that going into it so I can have realistic expectations.
