What do people think of Etsy reproduction cardboard boxes?
Thinking about ordering some for my legit snes carts, and wondering what the collecting community thinks of them.
I mean, if i bought a game with one all i would like to know is if its a repro, although if the quality is super new, its pretty obvious.
But overall would just like them because they look good on a shelf and the art and back of box are nostalgic to look and read.
Etsy reproduction boxes
Re: Etsy reproduction boxes
As long as you're not trying to pass them off as legit/original, I have no problem with them. I have some Saturn cases with insert-art I printed out myself because they look better on shelves. For Genesis games in cardboard cases, I used to keep the outer part of the box with the art and throw out the inner part to save space: being able to get reproductions is a lifesaver now that I have space to keep them on shelves!
But for non-Genesis games I don't really like keeping the games in cardboard boxes and I feel like I'm damaging the box every time I open it. So I awkwardly keep my NES and Game Boy games OUT of their boxes for the most part.

I don't mind reproduction boxes either, as long as people don't try to pass them off as legit. Regarding my games, all my boxes for my childhood SNES, GameBoy, and N64 games were thrown out, but I do still have most of the manuals. Don't think I want to spend what it'd take to get original boxes for those games, but maybe down the line when I have the space, I can get some reproduction boxes.
Luckily I kept the boxes for my Genesis and GameBoy Advance stuff.

Same here. Most of the boxes for my SNES games were thrown out, but I do have a few plus whatever random ones I happened to acquire over the years. But for the N64, I actually saved ALL of the boxes for games I bought (although I mainly collected cart-only games since the year 2000) so I have quite a few of them. But I keep my boxes separate from the carts (and manuals, too). It's kind of a pain in the ass, but I don't want to needlessly handle the boxes just to get the carts and/or manuals out. You can get those clear plastic cases to slip cardboard boxes into (like these) which will help protect against shelf wear. But it doesn't help with wear from opening and closing the flap, and makes it more of a pain in the ass to get at your games anyway.
I always wanted to go the Universal Game Case route (or similar) so I can have the best of both worlds (get to look at the cover art and keep my boxes nice) but those cases aren't cheap. And even with them, my legit boxes would be duplicate boxes at that point, and I'd still have to store them separately.
Oh, the struggles of the retro gamer.

Re: Etsy reproduction boxes
I've gotten rid of most of my boxed games. Too darn fragile and I don't want to worry about them when I move.
Do reproduction boxes have anything printed on them to indicate they're fake?

Re: Etsy reproduction boxes
Like repro carts, I think they should be labeled as such. I just use the clear cases and print out the covers for my shelf on a few expensive carts.
I always wonder if a big collector passes away and the wife has to try and sell off the shit not knowing what's fake or legit. I've told my wife about my gameye app, so look there if I check out lol

Depends on the seller, but some put their logo or an additional icon on the barcode to notify people it's a repro box.

That's good you setup that app and told your wife about it. I gotta have a better system of cataloging my stuff, I just have a text file on my computer. Lol.
Re: Etsy reproduction boxes
Seems were all in the same boat with boxes for the most part, i have most my N64 boxes, all my GBA boxes, but at about $11 a box on etsy, im considering getting ones for my favorite SNES games that are misding boxes.

Depends on the maker, but the ones im looking at dont say anything, but since they are repros you can tell by material and colors printed, also smell? lol
Re: Etsy reproduction boxes
I don't personally have a problem with repro boxes for the most part, however sellers trying to pass them off as real is a huge issue (at least here, don't know about other countries). So many repro boxes aren't clearly marked as repro. Unfortunately they have flooded video game stores here that stock retro and aren't specialists who are able to pick up on fake boxes (or carts, for that matter).
