So my friend is going Pandora mod my PSP for me tomorrow...

Post by Flak Beard »

I'm a complete newbie to the mod...

I've already got some eBoots ready, but was wondering what the best source (site) was for emulation. I'm assuming once it's done, it's just a matter of drag and dropping emulators/roms onto the Pro Duo in the appropriate directories?

Any starting advice would be greatly appreciated. :D

http://pspslimhacks.com/psp-emulators has a bunch of emulators. I cant remember where I got the ones I use but you can find them around. If the site i posted doesnt work out a quick google search can help you out. you can use any ROMS with the emulators. search google for things like psp homebrew and things like that for other things

You've got it! That's pretty much all you do.

One thing that pisses me off about the whole PSP CFW scene is the amount of out dated material on the web. So many times I'll be following old, out dated information or trying to use an old version of a program... scratching my head wondering why I can't get it to work. For example, I was trying to use an ISO loader not knowing that CFW can run ISO by itself now. Maybe it's just me, I don't know. I also feel that a lot of guides on the internet are written by youngsters that come across like "Gosh, what are you stupid? THIS is how you do it, psh, it's so easy." And it's like, "I'd understand this shit much better if it wasn't written by morons!"

But anyways, congrats, dude! The PSP is such a powerful device, so much you can do with it using CFW. Have fun.

Yes, unfortunately, there is a lot of...immaturity in the "scene". Of course, this is bound to happen when the masses (more specifically, 1-14 year old teenage boys) are given anything like this for free without ever having to contribute.

There is a very simple directory structure, which is basically /PSP/GAME/App1, /PSP/GAME/App2, etc.
I would also advise looking into a replacement shell application called IRShell. It allows for multitasking, and is much more powerful and skinnable than the default. Also, in addition to the multitude of applications and emulators, ps1 games can be converted to play on the PSP (not sure if this was knowledge to you already), but that's very cool as well.

Get a BIG memory card if you don't already have one. I got a 2GB card with my PSP, didn't know about CFW when I bought it. Now I'm looking to finally getting a larger card since the prices have dropped a lot since I got mine.

Emulators and ROMs take up hardly any room, given how small ROM files are. The Genesis emulator that I use also supports Sega CD, so those images would start taking up a lot if you got a few of them. What really starts taking up room is PSP ISOs, since they're usually around 1GB, and movies.

Speaking of movies, I like to use DVD Shrink and Aimersoft DVD Ripper. You probably already heard of DVD Shrink, I use it because of it's awesome compression quality. Aimersoft DVD Ripper might be able to compress, I forget, but I use it to convert. It can rip a DVD to pretty much any format under the sun.

It's weird, since the Wii homebrew scene has come off as very professional and well thought out. They have a very nice step-by-step guide for installing the Homebrew Channel, some nice utilities for downloading apps directly from your Wii, and overall don't act like douches.

I guess it's the whole "casual vs hardcore" thing. The PSP is the "hardcore" handheld, not like that kiddy DS. So all the teenagers who are compensating for something gravitate there. While the "casual" Wii gets the adults who understand that it's not the device that counts; it's how you use it.

Yeah, the Wii scene (and to an extent, DS scene) is extremely impressive. Things are updated regularly, most of the installers do the work for you provided you have a working wi-fi connection, and more progress seems to be made all the time.

Getting things setup up on the Wii compared to the PSP is like night and day. Of course, as part of the Wii being casual, there is a lot more support behind it, which definitely helps.

It's true, people in the CFW and homebrew are quite annoying. Many of them act as if everyone is already a know it all or already part of the homebrew "club", so it can get VERY frustrating finding information that is simple and easy to understand. And believe me, things on the homebrew/CFW scene can get VERY complicated. Also, there is this annoying "google it" mindset that is so prevalent these days. Problem is, with more and more people on the internet telling you to google it rather than help you, the natural consequence is that the amount of useful info google is able to provide becomes more and more scarce. But people don't seem to get that.
