What Made you Smile/What Ticked you off Today?

As an uncle myself, I tend to focus on getting things my nephew likes. If he likes Pokémon, it’d be really dumb to get him a Forza game because I like cars.REPO Man wrote:Betcha you all never had a cool uncle willing to do all of this.
Or they might not appreciate it. Or it'll get unhooked by one of the adults and tossed into a box or cabinet to gather dust
So because I get things my nephew would actually appreciate, I’m deff not cool…
I own too many hoodies jackets hoodies and DS games and I’m not ashamed!

Well, since I don't know their exact tastes I'm literally just throwing in damn near everything.
I know the boys like NERF guns so I figure a crapton of shmups and FPS games would be up their alley. And one of my nieces DID say she liked Sonic the Hedgehog and iirc she is also into horror (she went as Slenderman for Halloween), so I've tossed in tons of Sonic games (including ROM hacks) and if she's developing a taste for horror maybe she'll enjoy the likes of Resident Evil.
I've also hedged my bets with tradition sports games, RPGs, fighting games, beatemups and quirky hidden gems.

You're not going to listen, but I'd never give an emulation device to someone who isn't familiar with them. The interface is almost always confusing, and while you have good intentions, throwing countless ROMs on there likely makes the experience even more frustrating and overwhelming.
You'd be better off just including a handful of games you know they like, or might like, but it's still dodgy if they're going to have trouble navigating the emulator.

Yea I'd say give the more essential titles, go over it with them, and if they enjoy it explore further and give them more roms.
And definitely go for interests. My anniversary is soon with my partner, who loves Mass Effect. So, I got them wooden Mass Effect coasters, and will get a custom made drawing of them in Shepard's outfit with their 2 favourite characters, and will get that printed as a smallish poster.

I'm pretty sure helping them broaden their horizons is a much better idea.

That sounds more like you're just forcing the things you like on them without considering their interests.REPO Man wrote:I'm pretty sure helping them broaden their horizons is a much better idea.

I'm pretty sure that for it to be "forcing" I'd have to drag them out to the living room, put the controller in their hand and threaten them with violence if they put the controller down. Just like I'm pretty sure "forcing" is NOT just giving them a game console and showing them what's on it.
As for movies, I don't MAKE them watch the DVDs I get them for Christmas every year. Nor can I make them.

Oh yeah that makes total sense. My nephew loves Pokémon so I’ll get into dog fighting.REPO Man wrote:I know the boys like NERF guns so I figure a crapton of shmups and FPS games would be up their alley.
