Nomad Question.

Post by Lokkenjawnz »

Alright so today I picked up a Sega Nomad in pretty much perfect condition, no battery pack though, which leads me to my question: has anyone here ever made or know of anyone making a DIY battery pack for it? I looked briefly on ebay for the packs, and some of them were going for 40 dollars, which strikes me as ridiculous. I'm fairly certain they sell the six battery holder things at stores like Radio Shack for electronic projects, so it would just be a matter of connecting it to the spots on the Nomad, and attaching the battery unit itself to the system. What do you guys think?

Then, on a much more bizarre note: I want to use my Master System converter on the Nomad. I know it doesn't quite fit into the system, I tried myself. So my idea is using a Game Genie to attach it. Would that work, technically speaking? I know it would be unbelievably stupid, and would probably need to be cradled like a newborn baby, but if it'll work, I'll try it. I'm a sucker for unwieldy, ridiculous things. Probably why I got the Nomad actually.

First off, here is a battery pack solution to consider: http://www.bestsku.com/productsDetail.asp?PID=2722

It's cheap and it works fairly well...hell, for $10 you can't go wrong.

As far as making something that would accept 6 AA, I don't see why not. I have the official pack and there isn't anything special. Just connection terminals that lead from the battery to the connectors that stick out of the back of the nomad.

That battery pack is awesome. Have you bought anything from that site before? I'm not exactly keen on buying from some random place no one knows about.

Also, I've heard that the original rechargeable battery pack that was released had some issues with longevity, that it would apparently die out after a couple years, do you know anything about that?

None of the original Sega Nomad batteries will work. Even if new in box they have all dried up. I was in the same boat, found a few really vague posts about other options and went ahead and bought the Sega adapter. I use rechargable AA in it and get what you'd expect from a Nomad. Still fun to bust it out on mass transit for a play :)

gradualmeltdown is right. The old rechargeable won't work. I have a few Nomads (still have my original!) and one was missing the battery pack when I bought it, the price you see on ebay is high because LOTS of these battery packs have gone missing. I've not been able to find any other alternatives, homemade or otherwise.

Good luck!

Alright so it looks like the rechargeable battery isn't the way to go. So my remaining choice is the AA battery pack setup, which should be DIY-able. I think I'll have to look into that. I'll let you guys know if I figure anything out.

If you can get a cheap rechargable battery pack you should be able to just remove the innards and replace it with regular batteries and a clip for them. The hardest part I see with a DIY pack is getting it connected with the Nomad, so that would solve it for you.

That's actually a good point, I hadn't even thought of that. So I should be able to just pull the cells and replace them with my own batteries, without messing around with anything else? Do you know if the cells are the same voltage as regular batteries? I know that Ni-MH batteries are 1.2v (at least I think they are), but I think the Nomad pack uses lithium batteries doesn't it?
