In that case, if you wanna play SMT1, someone used the iOS port to make an English version of the GBA version. For those who don't know, the iOS version (and iirc the Japan-only Android version) is just a GBA rom running via an emulator that apparently swaps out the soundtrack with that of the PS1 version.
I just wish Atlus would just release all the 8-, 16- and 32-bit MegaTen games in English. Given this would include the mainline games (Kyuuyaku Megami Tensei, which is a remake of the NES Megami Tensei titles, along with SMT 1-2 and SMT if...), the first three Persona games, the Last Bible games and so on. And then make HD remasters of all the PS2 titles,

Oh, is that all? Gee, I wonder why they don't just knock those right out...REPO Man wrote:I just wish Atlus would just release all the 8-, 16- and 32-bit MegaTen games in English. Re: Games Beaten 2021
The 8- and 16-bit titles wouldn't be that difficult. Hell, a bunch of hobbyists have translated all of the older games in their free time. So imagine what Atlus could pull off.
The first three Persona games were ported to PSP and Sony literally used a PSP emulator when they released the PS4 port of Parappa the Rapper. Atlus could probably do the same thing and set it to upscale the graphics.
Persona 4: Golden recently got a PC port, so making a console port isn't entirely out of the question.

Re: Games Beaten 2021
Except Atlus would contract M2 to use bespoke, tailored emulation code and would have to pay their own localization team. I think there's a reason they haven't released some of these previously. It's never as easy as you think it is.
Re: Games Beaten 2021
It took five people in their spare time to unofficially translate SMT if... for the SNES and they didn't have all of Atlus' resources. If it took five people in the spare time ~3-5 years, imagine what a large corporate could accomplish with dozens, if not hundred, of employees and more resources than Aeon Genesis had. Plus, it's not unheard of for companies to recruit fan translators or use their works. In fact, XSEED did just that with a fan translation for Ys: The Oath of Felghana's PC port, and used it to translate the PSP version, all the offset the costs of localizing what was described as a "niche game".marurun wrote:Except Atlus would contract M2 to use bespoke, tailored emulation code and would have to pay their own localization team. Now imagine Atlus doing the same for all the fan translations out there and then reworking them slightly. It'd save a TON of time and money.
Of course this would work best if they were using the SNES versions of SMT1-2 and SMT if..., while one would probably prefer the PS1 remakes. But with preexisting English versions of these games, including the official English version of SMT1 for iOS, it'd save a ton of time.
Re: Games Beaten 2021
And that's why I said it's never as easy as you think it is. It took a team of 5 hobbyists 3-5 years. Sega/Atlus doesn't hire hobbyists, and if they did they would pay full price. They are not Xseed. Whatever flaws their localizations have they are a fully pro outfit, and part of the larger Sega conglomerate. Regardless of which emulation tack they took they would likely work with M2 (most likely) or Hamster or Digital Eclipse, or work exclusively with Sony, and they would probably rely either on their internal localization teams or hire an established company in that space like 8-4 Play. Further, I don't see these titles garnering the kinds of US sales that Atlus would want to see to make this happen. They're not the boutique developer they used to be throwing spaghetti on the wall. They're an arm of Sega now, and they're focused on their most profitable titles and the most profitable avenues for older titles. So yes, Atlus COULD well do what you propose, but I don't see that they would WANT to. It would be risky for them, and even if their risk paid off it wouldn't have the kinds of returns that would make it worth their investment. Unlike Capcom with Mega Man, the SMT and Persona titles are not easy to pick up and play. RPGs like that also don't lend themselves to collections, meaning they'd have to one-off them, and SMT and older Persona are not Dragon Quest or Final Fantasy.REPO Man wrote:It took five people in their spare time to unofficially translate SMT if... for the SNES and they didn't have all of Atlus' resources. Re: Games Beaten 2021
Meanwhile, there are people who will put those games on reproduction carts and sell them.
The problem isn't that these games are too niche to be profitable. The problem is that not too many people know about them to want them. If more people knew about the earlier Persona titles or the classic Shin Megami Tensei titles, that would generally generate demand. People can't demand something they don't know about. Keep it obscure and it'll stay obscure.

Re: Games Beaten 2021
That's a possibility. Though for Atlus it is still a risk. And given Sega's constantly shifting administrative decisions, I don't see Atlus doing anything that isn't sticking to the guaranteed bottom line.

37. Hentai vs Evil - Switch - June 1

Hentai vs Evil is a game produced by Eastasiasoft that my buddy Josh (@JoshuaMFrench) who works as a project lead for them told me about. It's a pretty barebones fan service third person shooter, but there's some fun to be had in short bursts. Just go in with tempered expectations and don't expect it to be more than it is.

The basic story of the game (if you can call it that) is that two anime waifus have been kidnapped and imprisoned by zombies, and the remaining anime waifu has to free them. You do this by fighting your way through a bunch of zombies and pig enemies that are totally just low budget Moblins to find the cage holding said anime waifu. You have to kill twelve reaper enemies before you can unlock the cage, but that's about all there is to it. There's three levels, and they all play out the same; kill twelve reapers, then go towards the purple column of light to find and unlock the cage. There's also a survival mode where you just try to survive as long as you can against waves of enemies.

Three levels, three playable waifus, and four weapons to choose from (at least I only found four). You can use a machine gun, a shotgun, a sniper rifle, or a grenade launcher. I personally went with the machine gun or the grenade launcher. I felt that the shotgun was too inaccurate even at close range, and the controls just weren't precise enough for me to feel comfortable with a sniper rifle. It's pretty obvious that the game's low budget as the character models and environments both look really bland, and there's honestly not much content. There are also some performance hiccups; I hit a few frame rate drops with an especially bad one when I finished a level and all of the enemies still alive instantly died. It is, however, only $10 ($8 if you got it during the launch sale), and it's a quirky novelty game, so it's a good meme game if nothing else.

Hentai vs Evil honestly reminds me a lot of The Last of Waifus in that it's a pretty barebones game that you can fully experience in under an hour and excels most - and exclusively - at being a novelty. Granted, it's definitely better than that game, but it's not great. I certainly don't regret downloading it day one, but it's also definitely not a game that I'm going to come back to, and as much as I'd love to, it's not a game that I can really recommend. There's just not much to it. If you do get it, make sure to get it on sale as it's just not worth $10, and if you're going to get it, though, definitely get it on Switch; I don't know for certain about the Steam release, but I know it's censored on PS4 and PS5 whereas there's an option to play with fully exposed titties on Switch. They're bland low res titties, but still, exposed titties in a game on a Nintendo console is a novelty, right?
