I fully embrace the blockbuster crap. Not every movie I see needs to have a deep or gripping narrative. I mean, sure. Sometimes I want a good story, but sometimes I just want to see pretty visuals and have things go *BOOM*. Nothing is wrong with either. What irks me is when people expect both, or the movie doesn’t know which one it wants to be.

Totally agree here. It's nice to enjoy a blockbuster or thoughtless action flick after a stressful day of work or errands, where you had to be on point all day.

I do enjoy independent films and older films that have a deeper narrative or intricate plot, but I don't find myself seeking them out as much as I did when I was younger and had less responsibilities.

Going out to see a movie is one of the things I've missed most during the pandemic.

A lot of times, what I watch is based on mood, impulse and sometimes how much time I have to watch something.

I'd like to see theater subscriptions. But you still have to pay for the drinks and popcorn. Definitely movie studios will have to reconsider their pricing structures. Being in the theater business was already a risk. Now it's even more so.

That was already a thing. MoviePass or whatever it was called.

That was a third party thing. I'm talking about within a movie chain, so that they can better control costs.

There is a theater in my area called Film Forum that's had a membership program, it's an independent non-profit theater actually. It's $75 for the year, and instead of tickets costing $15 each, you pay $9 per ticket with the membership. The membership would also grant access to events with speakers for certain films and an annual event with the programmers of the theater.

I don't have a membership there, but my friend did for a few years, as he would go see a ton of movies.

That theater's doing a lot of digital screenings, and I was able to see some movies that aren't available on streaming platforms yet. Here's the details in case it's of any interest: https://filmforum.org/support/more/membership

I've heard of Film Forum. We don't have anything like that here on Hatteras Island. The theater here in Avon's been closed for about a decade and the nearest theater is the one-screen locally owned Pioneer in Manteo (45-50 minutes away) and the 10-screen R/C Theater in Kitty Hawk next to the old Kmart that's apparently gonna become a Target. If I had the cash, I'd definitely open something similar to Film Forum or the Walter Reed Theater (heard of it via featurette on The Criterion Channel). I'm thinking of calling it The Kino-Keet, a play on Avon's original name of Kinnakeet and the German word Kino, meaning "cinema". I'd show first and second run films, foreign and independent cinema and do retrospectives and other events.

That looks like a good time. The Roxie in San Francisco has a similar program that has apparently worked out well for them. It's pretty much a dump, but a dump with character and history. https://www.roxie.com/

Currently rewatching Jesus Christ Superstar: Live Arena Tour. Easily one of my favorite versions of JCS.

Probably the first silent film I've ever seen, this Harold Lloyd classic follows a young man who moved to the big city, where he ends up in a series of mishaps and misadventures which concludes with him climbing a building and setting up the iconic imagine of Lloyd dangling from a clock stories above a busy street.

Highly recommend!
