I wore out my VHS copy of Godzilla vs. Megalon, so I can't say anything there. For me, the Hollis Frampton experimental shorts were tough to sit through. Carrots & Peas just doesn't do anything for me.PretentiousHipster wrote:He said it was torture going through that lol. Apparently some of the Godzilla films were godawful too.Ack wrote:Ooph, the Olympics boxed set too? That one...not for me.PretentiousHipster wrote:EDIT: Fun fact, a friend of mine has watched every Criterion film except the 5-6 or so that are coming out soon that were not released previously.
What was the last movie you've seen?

I'm like 50/50 on Hollis Frampton. Zorns Lemma is one of my all time favs though.Ack wrote: I wore out my VHS copy of Godzilla vs. Megalon, so I can't say anything there. For me, the Hollis Frampton experimental shorts were tough to sit through. Carrots & Peas just doesn't do anything for me.

I'll give you that one, so long as I never have to watch Lemon again.PretentiousHipster wrote:I'm like 50/50 on Hollis Frampton. Re: What was the last movie you've seen?
Just finished watching the recent film adaptation of Roald Dahl's The Witches. I haven't seen the previous adaptation, though I've heard many people hold that one in higher regard. But I can say I enjoyed the new version.
Re: What was the last movie you've seen?
Oh, that's why it popped up on NetFlix, because there was a 2020 remake. I'll watch the remake if convinient, but I'm sure I would never like it as much as the original adaptation.
I just watched Scary Movie V. I didn't even know there were 5 of them, I didn't even realize there were 4 of them! Well 5 sucked. It just wasn't funny at all.

Never seen the original but watched this with my kids. Ok I guess, they liked it. I guess folks had a cow about people with hand/finger problems with some of the effects lol. Whatever
Re: What was the last movie you've seen?
I can understand the hand/finger issue. It was such an odd and unnecessary inclusion. Even the sketches from Dahl's original book don't have it, so it’s not like they did it for "literary accuracy".
Re: What was the last movie you've seen?
Not a movie but I found a filmed production of the West End musical Everybody's Talking About Jamie on YouTube (where the uploader called it a "slime tutorial", as is apparently a thing with Broadway bootlegs).
I wanted to stream it legally but I couldn't find it on any streaming services available in the States, nor did it get a home video release in the States.
The plot is inspired by a television documentary about a teenage drag queen, though it's not directly based on true events AFAIK. There was a film adaptation set to release but it kept getting pushed back and there's no word on it's release date. Guess the Disney-owned 20th Century Studios didn't want to go the straight-to-streaming route.

Just finished watching Suburbia, a 1983 film from Penelope Spheeris, of Decline of Western Civilization fame. Here, a pair of brothers run away from their alcoholic mother and find family in a group of punks who live in an abandoned house near the highway. The film feels darkly comedic at times as we see their trials and the trials of their ersatz family of punks and ultimately a conflict that seems triumphant at first and ends in heart-crushing tragedy. Sadly it leaves The Criterion Channel on the 31st, along with a large chunk of films (this was part of a monthly collection called Women Filmmakers of New World Pictures).

The stink stunk, and I'm glad people didn't shy away from addressing it. If you feel guilty, redeem yourself by buying this wonderful tale of a person with a physical disability going to school for the first time. Or don't. I won't judge. (it is a great read)
Movie talk. Syndercut wasn't my jam. Neither was the Josstice League, so I think it isn't my cup of tea to begin with.
FEELING THROUGH (available on Youtube) is a magical short film about dignity and disability. Seek it out. It's a wonderful look into what makes human beings human.
Bye bye medium budget films. When theaters re-open it is going to be probably 22 months of blockbuster crap after blockbuster crap.
Indies have time to shine, but the movies that drive good movies....thing of the past for years to come.
