New write-up of the week:

Death Ship

Image

A small group of shipwreck survivors stumble upon good fortune when they spot an old tanker out at sea. But their apparent salvation is short lived when they realize the old ship isn't just abandoned, but haunted by unfriendly ghosts. And not just any unfriendly ghosts either. This ship be filled with the second worst kind of ghost* of all: Nazi ghosts!

A surprisingly competent and entertaining little "haunted house" tale, that's just sadly bogged down by a lot of inconsistencies. People don't react appropriately to situations, they'll say one thing then do another (sometimes seconds later), and their "ghost" logic only remains consistent when it suites the plot or looks good. The film could have probably also benefitted with a different editor. Some scenes get reused, some are too jumpy to figure out what's going on, some are too quick, some are waaaay to long....You get the point. But the film looks nice and the acting is pretty decent, so if you can overlook the inconsistencies and plot holes then it might not be too bad.

*The worst ghosts of course being Japanese ghosts, because seriously, f*&% those guys.

Back when I lived in Hiawassee, the wife and I would drive to Clayton frequently because it had the closest Chic-fil-a. Also Goats on the Roof is a fun touristy place in the nearby Tiger, GA. http://www.goats-on-the-roof.com/ Worth checking out if you are in the area.
fun fonts on a website... I think I have not seen that since...1999...

Did a rewatch of Metropolitan. Whit Stillman did what is pretty much the only great Jane Austen film (Love & Friendship), but this film definitely gave me modern Jane Austen vibes as well. A hilarious look of a lower class man who's a fan of Charles Fourier getting invited in younger bourgeoisies parties and the resulting conversations from that. A lot of it comes down to intellectual, or I guess pseudo-intellectual, talk, and both makes fun of it and embraces it at the same time. Highly recommend if a line like "I don't real novels, I read literary criticism" is a funny line to you.

Yes! That’s a really stupendous movie, and I’m glad you enjoyed it.

Also, the latest film version of Emma is solid. Like you, I don’t usually enjoy feature-length Austen adaptations - the books work much better as mini-series - but I still very much enjoyed Emma (2020) and the aforementioned Love & Friendship (2016).

Metropolitan really woke me up too. My confession is that I used to run a fairly large tumblr blog on arthouse cinema when the website was at its prime. Won't link because I'm quite sure the account got hacked and replaced with porn lol. I let my ratings of those films be affected by how much cred I would get for posting them. I did it another way by finding films that maybe 3 people rated on imdb, or aren't even on imdb at all, for more cred. Don't get me wrong, I have found some fantastic films doing this, unearthed quite a few treasures, but now I look through my ratings and there's like a 2 year period where I see a film I gave a high rating too and remember literally nothing about it.

The people in Metropolitan can be seen as despicable, but I see it as a fairly accurate coming-of-age story. Liking stuff, or talking about deep stuff to others just to try to impress them, or perhaps to fit in. It's a natural thing to do and I was barely older than them when I did that. Almost 30 now, and I'm realizing that oddly enough sincerity is what is seen as the most impressive. I'm damn proud to say that I could do a double bill of a collection of Brakhage shorts and The Mummy, and love them both.

Also realizing that as I'm older my taste will obviously be vastly different, and those "classics" that I couldn't get into might be better now. I wanna give Bunuel, Fellini, Godard, and Bergman another chance. I did rewatch Bergman's Winter Light last year and absolutely loved that one, when I didn't give a shit about it 10 years ago.

Nah I torrent everything tbh. Regional stuff makes it difficult. Of course aside from buying blurays.

EDIT: Fun fact, a friend of mine has watched every Criterion film except the 5-6 or so that are coming out soon that were not released previously.

He said it was torture going through that lol. Apparently some of the Godzilla films were godawful too.

New write-up of the week:

Don't Go in the House

Image

Meek and detached Donny Kohler works at a job he hates and lives with is verbally and physically abusive mother. After Donny's mother dies he finds himself free of her controlling ways and completely alone in a huge house. Does he do the smart thing and sell the house and seek out extensive therapy? Pffft. Of course not. Donny instead decided to take his anger towards his mother out on whatever unsuspecting woman he can convince to come into his home, by tying them up and burning them to death. Then he dresses the corpses up in his mother's old clothes and talks to them. Donny is not a well man. Luckily, he's not a smart one either, because it doesn't take more than a week for people to notice that quiet little Donny is acting very, very strange.

This one is more of a psychological character study than it is an outright horror. It starts off with a bang, when Donny uses a flamethrower to literally roast his first victim to death. After that the film just kind of....stagnates? Like, they showed their best hand at the beginning and then instead of staying there or trying to outdo themselves, they drop it down a couple levels and just stay there for the rest of the film as they focus on Donny and his mental state. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing, as Donny is pretty disturbing and interesting, but you just can't help but feel that they did the whole thing backwards. I mean, they essentially get your expectations up and then fail to deliver. Which is disappointing, because I can see the potential here. But it still ends up being an interesting example of an early 'slasher'.
