Barring other issues, an SSD and a bump up to 8GB of RAM are usually sufficient to make laptops of that vintage solid general use computers.RCBH928 wrote:Had to through couple of old laptops. I felt sorry. It has like 4GB ram, HDD, functioning DVD writer drives, working display, batteries, charge bricks, keyboard and not to mention the Windows license. I feel like somehow this could put into good use. But who wants a 7-10 year second hand old laptop, literally worthless usability wise and fixing anything in it is probably going to cost more than its worth.

Re: Random Thoughts Thread
My situation sucks. I thought about it but one laptop has GPU glitch, it works but you never know when the display will suddenly go crazy. Not nice in mid level of a game. The other is an HP laptop which is archaic from pre-2010 it seems and I have no charger for it. The charger wire port seems proprietary.isiolia wrote: Barring other issues, an SSD and a bump up to 8GB of RAM are usually sufficient to make laptops of that vintage solid general use computers.
The HP one I have is similar to this one, which I do believe has 8GB RAM. Isn't that crazy good for a 2010 laptop? Apple still sells flagship computers with 8GB. The iPad still ships with 4GB.
If I can salvage this one it would be great, except its heavy feels like a dumbbell.
Re: Random Thoughts Thread
I have too much laptop parts - ram, chargers, batteries, optical drives etc. Most I extracted from dead systems before recycling, but I recently got my friend's dad's collection as well. They all stack well, but still, I have no room and would gladly mail you whatever you could use for free. Hate to see a working laptop go to waste.
That being said, I have a confession to make about the old computer recycling program. If it is so obsolete to be redundant, but still capable of making a picture and noise, I invoke the "So lonely protocol".
I load a low quality wave file from an episode of the Start Trek animated series onto the device, then with a selection of blunt objects, the original owner and I proceed to recreate the printer scene from office space. The parts are then recycled as they should be. I often save up a pile of them for maximum "So Lonely!" effect. I've heard that sound through so many piezoelectric speakers it rarely even brings a tear to my eye.

A common setup for discrete graphics cards in laptops is "switchable" graphics. The idea being that the machine will use the more efficient integrated graphics most of the time, and only spin up the discrete GPU when it'd be beneficial. If that machine has that setup, you may try seeing what options are available to you for forcing it, disabling it, etc, in case one of them works more consistently.
The other one... 8GB would have been above average to ship with, but not necessarily that crazy, especially if it was a higher spec model. It would have been a very cheap upgrade at one point as well. RAM configurations/upgrades tend to follow the market.
You likely can find a knockoff AC adapter for it fairly readily. The larger companies like that don't tend to change that port too often. Main thing I'd look out for is that there were some of those dv series that had a lot of issues with the GPU (I think solder problems, similar to RRoD). Not a unique thing - there's a range of Macbook Pros with much the same issue - just sort of a common issue from around that time period to be aware of.

I know there are a couple of us who are football fans. Any thoughts on seeing Drew Brees retire? He was an incredible quarterback, and as a Falcons fan, one hell of a tough opponent.
Of course this doesn't mean we have another Super Bowl chance, what with Brady hanging out down here... Heh, who am I kidding. We'd find a way to blow it no matter what.

wasn't a saints fan, Cowboys, but loved watching him play and seemed like a good dude despite last years crap. always pulled for him since he was labled undersized. 20 years? i remember watching him in college. shit i'm getting old lol.
Re: Random Thoughts Thread
Yeah, despite being rivals, Brees seemed like a genuinely good guy. I figured he'd retire after that injury in 2020 though.
How you feeling about keeping Dak?

Great guy, 2nd tier talent. Didnt want him signed for mahomes money. Trade zeke as well.Ack wrote:Yeah, despite being rivals, Brees seemed like a genuinely good guy. I figured he'd retire after that injury in 2020 though.

Re: Random Thoughts Thread
Yeah, that was awkward. Cowboys had some possible QB trade options too, like maybe certain dudes in Seattle or Houston. I don't think Dak is a bad guy, and an offense built around his strengths can do well. Ezekiel, yeah, too much money. Cut him for the cap space.
Just don't hire Antonio Brown. Seriously, the league needs to stop that crap.
