Scared to Death



AKA: Scared to Death: Syngenor

Or as I like to call it "Stop Meandering in the Dark, While There's a Killer on the Loose, You Morons!"

A quirky ex-cop is asked to solve a string of violent murders, but refuses help until his girlfriend gets attacked.

That's....pretty much the whole basis of the plot. There isn't anything new going on here. The sole reason to watch it is so you can stare in befuddlement at all the weird-ass stuff going on in the film. The hero is an absolute dip, it's obvious right from the start that his love interest is there solely to be used as motivation later on in the script and just about every character spends at least one scene slowly wandering around darkened corridors and only one of them has the good sense to run the hell away when the monster shows up, instead of just standing there and letting the creature polish them off. Add in some dumb-ass dialogue, and odd design choices like poorly timed music queues and doorknobs that come up to your shoulders, and you've found yourself a real winner.

At least the monster design was pretty cool.

Ouch this has a low score on RYM too. The youtube video mentions Vittorio De Sica and I was like how can one of his films just be ok, and with such a low RYM score? Then I realized he just starred in it and didn't direct it lol

Rewatched RENT: Filmed Live on Broadway, a pro-shot of the final performance of RENT, which turns 25 this year, that was previously broadcasted live to select cinemas before being put on DVD and Blu-ray.

FYI, here Mimi is played by future Hamilton alum, Renee Elise Goldsberry. Also the cast includes Eden Espinoza, who previously played Elphaba in Wicked (both Elphaba and Maureen were originally played by Idina Menzel in their respective shows) and Telly Leung (who was also in the Godspell revival with George Salazar, Uzo Aduba and Hunter Parrish, along with productions of Aladdin and Jesus Christ Superstar and directed the short musical drama Grind, starring Anthony Rapp).

For those who don't know, RENT is a modern retelling of La Boheme, set in New York City's famed East Village, circa the mid-'90s. Sadly, creator Johnathan Larson passed away shortly after it's debut. His other show, Tick Tick BOOM, is apparently set to receive a film adaptation directed by Lin-Manuel Miranda.

Just finished watching the 2000 film adaptation of Jesus Christ Superstar, which shortly after it's US home video release was shown on PBS's Great Performances, ironic since this adaptation is at best "pretty good".

Interesting sidenote is that in 2002 Glenn Carter, who here played Jesus, would become the leader of the UK branch of something called the Raëlian Movement, which states that humans were created by extraterrestrials.

AntiTrust. The end of it is better than the start which is a very rare thing to say. They nailed the big tech. and evil CEO image, its like the predicted Facebook back in 2000. Maybe it was Bill Gates at the time. I must say I have some respect for the creators for putting in some real programming stuff in there over the 3D towers in Hackers. There is nothing worthwhile here. Its the expected cheesy stuff, but I must say they probably nailed their target audience right on the head especially for the year 2000. Movie holds well and very modern, if they would just update the tech in they could release it today as is. It was a bit eerie seeing CRT screens in there.

Due to my belief that experiencing media on the tech. of its times give it an extra taste, I watched it on a portable DVD player. I got the full experience complete with video stutters and DVD skipping. Reminded me why I hated that format so much (for rental!). I had to rent from iTunes to fill in the missing pieces iTunes administrator probably had a heart attack seeing that movie rented probably thought a glitch in the system. Now that I think about it, I probably should have at least given the old beat up CD at a least a wipe with alcohol.
