What was the last movie you've seen?

Talk about just about anything else that is non-gaming here, but keep it clean

Adult oriented anime like Ghost in a Shell is ok with me, but I can't stand the more childish ones like Naruto and One Piece. The never ending series does not help either. I will not watch 964 episodes of One Piece. I see the comic side of anime but it grows mundane too soon.

The perpetual anime shows like that tend to be the exception rather than the rule. Like with western shows, anime tends to come out seasonally in blocks of 10-13 or so episodes. Many series run for one or two of those seasons, and that's it. Even some of the longer ones still come out over the course of a year or two and finish up.
To be fair, you do sometimes have spinoff series, or shows where full "seasons" are broken up more and labeled differently (especially if there's a gap in the releases), but quite a lot of shows are ~10-26 episodes (skim the first few hundred on the list here for instance).

A lot of the well known series do tend to be those shounen style ones you mentioned, which are in turn often the long running shows.

There's plenty there that skews a little older, and isn't as much of an investment to watch. It just may take a little more searching, since it would have been a big thing people were following for a year before moving on to the next set of shows.

Rewatched "Hair" before work while assembling a new media shelf.

I enjoyed it slightly more this time. Hair, I mean. I'll have to wait and see if I enjoy the media shelf. Sadly I'm not exactly the Milos Foreman of building stuff.

Watched Monster Hunter with my nephew. He's gotten a nice swarm of little dinosaurs in the game, and was really excited when I showed him the trailer. I knew the director and most of the main cast, so I knew what to expect. As expected, and even more than I even thought possible in a big budget videogame movie, it's a very long advertisement for the game. I wasn't expecting much, but a complete lack of plot, and then a cliffhanger ending that basically says "Yeah, if you want to see an ending (or even know what's happeneing), go buy the game - F.U.". My nephew agreed that it was an almost okay, but ultimately disappointing movie, but a very effective advertisement. At least the CG Palico was very much in character and the 2 minutes of screen time with him was the best part of the movie.

Blank Check. They just don't make them like this any more. Kid truly lived every 90s kid dream. He had more toys than Richie Rich.

First scene of the film there is an Apple computer and 2 teenage boys wondering how this thing works. What a sign of times. Today probably no one breathes without using a computer.

It's funny, my coworkers and I were just talking about that movie on Friday. Looking back on it the thing that sticks out to me is how the hell did he purchase the house? It's not a matter of money, there's a bunch of paperwork and contracts that need to be signed and notarized for a transfer of property deed. Any of that should have busted the kid.

Have you ever seen any of Screen Rant's Pitch Meetings? I can just hear it now.

Well aside from the money, wouldn't it be impossible for a kid to purchase a castle?
-No, super easy. Barely an inconvenience.
Well wouldn't the kid have to sign a bunch of paperwork?
-I don't know.
Oh, so we're just going to have the audience assume the kid some how takes care of this problem off screen?
-Yes, so the movie can happen.
Ah, glossing over the legalities of real estate is tight!

I learned to look over plot holes, it ruins the story. I don't write novels but just in my head quickly I tried to think of stories and found out that for every thing that makes sense, something else comes up that does not make sense that needs patching. Mimicking reality is a hard thing.

Good point, but phones today are computers too just a different form. Maybe I am getting old enough to the point where I look down on the next generation, but younger ones glueing their eyes 24/7 to a mini screen and doing everything on it is irritating me. It saddens me that they came out in this era and thought this is how life works, everyone staring at a small screen. Back in my day they would scream at us for sitting 2-3 hours infront of tv be it watching or gaming.

New write-up of the week:

Scared to Death

Image

AKA: Scared to Death: Syngenor

Or as I like to call it "Stop Meandering in the Dark, While There's a Killer on the Loose, You Morons!"

A quirky ex-cop is asked to solve a string of violent murders, but refuses help until his girlfriend gets attacked.

That's....pretty much the whole basis of the plot. There isn't anything new going on here. The sole reason to watch it is so you can stare in befuddlement at all the weird-ass stuff going on in the film. The hero is an absolute dip, it's obvious right from the start that his love interest is there solely to be used as motivation later on in the script and just about every character spends at least one scene slowly wandering around darkened corridors and only one of them has the good sense to run the hell away when the monster shows up, instead of just standing there and letting the creature polish them off. Add in some dumb-ass dialogue, and odd design choices like poorly timed music queues and doorknobs that come up to your shoulders, and you've found yourself a real winner.

At least the monster design was pretty cool.
