I've finally gotten around to creating a private Ultima Online server and it's up and running with no issues now. For the time being the only users are myself, my wife, and a friend or two. I won't promise much activity on the server outside of any here who choose to play, but if nothing else it's a free experience in what I consider the greatest MMORPG ever.
If any of you have an interest in turning the server into a "Racketboy" server, just post here. I'll gauge the level of interest and then start creating accounts upon request. I'll also post a guide for how to get things up and running. EA has made the client freely available and there is only one other piece of software needed to join the server.
Also, Racketboy, if you read this please let me know if you would be willing to grant permission to name the server "Racketboy."
Many thanks to you all.

I tried to get people here into other online RPGs like Guild Wars, Rappelz, and PSO:BB to no success at all. Don't even try.

I think I recall that, or at least some postings regarding a general distate for MMOs here. Nevertheless I thought I'd throw it out there. I would be content just messing around on my own private server, so no loss either way. The more the merrier, but I'll be... merry, either way.Mozgus wrote:I tried to get people here into other online RPGs like Guild Wars, Rappelz, and PSO:BB to no success at all. Don't even try.

Actually I'm playing Guild Wars right now. Not to hijack the thread, but I thought I'd point out that NCsoft is celebrating GW's 4th anniversary by giving away free storage upgrades and adding new bonus missions.

*strokes beard*
I think I finally found my excuse to install GW again.

Get on steam more often, and link it up with your guild wars install. Right now, I see Kevinski play sometimes and thats it. We all need to get together.philipofmacedon wrote:Actually I'm playing Guild Wars right now. I'd love to play some classic UO. That game was great around the T2A time period, then it hit the wall starting with Renaissance. I had a lot of fun with my miner/smith; I got a lot of respect as a GM smith in the early days. I was always saving up to buy some server birth rare for my tower. I hope someone enjoyed my stuff after my tower decayed.General Chaos wrote:I've finally gotten around to creating a private Ultima Online server and it's up and running with no issues now. I know this is a bit off topic, but i have never played a phantasy star game, i was just curious how it compares to a game like guild wars or world of warcraft. from the screenshots i've seen, they look like the same concept.

Hmm. Sounds like I should just play GW instead. Am I to understand that there aren't necessarily equipment drops in GW, but instead a system similar to Monster Hunter whereby you collect items from fallen foes in order to have an NPC craft armor for you?
That sounds quite entertaining to me.
Oh, and sakicfan84: unfortunately right now I am running a more current build of UO (post ML in fact)--due mainly to the fact that a very nice pre-made spawner and script compilation has been made for it. I am in the process of tweaking the skill gain system though. My plan is to increase gain rates (to avoid crazy things like 8x8) but also implement a slightly accelerated skill atrophy.
My thinking is you'll be able to gain skills much more organically--basically just use them and you'll get fairly good quickly, but skills you don't practice will atrophy.

I've never played Ultima Online properly. I remember buying it back in the day when it was uber cheap and I had no idea what it was. This was back when all we had was dial up access with a flat rate charge. I fannied around on it but never understood what I was doing at all.
