Valve has become the equivalent of ol' wacky Bill, the gun toting, batshit crazy, car salesman, with prices so low, they ought to be locked up. At least in Valve's case, there's no surprise rape.

asside from the fact that if Steam managed to go under or close just for shits n giggles you would be out of luck.

We've had this debate, and no you would not. They will release an offline steam client for us to use should they go out of business, which at this rate, is like saying Nintendo will go out of business.

Ever been to Bellevue at night? I swear Gabe Newell moves a lot faster than you might give him credit for.

When a company goes out of business, the assets they have are sold. The new owners might not take kindly to that. I believe that current management would like to release such a patch, but I don't think that's a reasonable thing to expect after bankruptcy proceedings. If such a
patch already existed, and was held in escrow by a third party in the event of a bankruptcy I would believe it. Until then, not so much.

I do agree that it seems very unlikely for Valve to go out of business. What's more likely is that someone would have a dispute with Valve. Maybe you have to do a charge back. Valve's response to this will be to shut down your account, and deny you access to all your games. Yeah, most people don't have a problem, but some do, and Valve treats them like shit. I'm not going to reward Valve with my dollars for that kind of behavior.

I really don't. Valve let me down with the great, but overpriced, and under supported L4D. And as far as third party games go, Steam offers no support for them, and the Steam client quite often creates additional technical issues with these games, especially the old ones. The developers usually say they refuse to support the Steam versions as well. I really only buy third party on Steam when its a sale, and I have a pretty good understanding of the framework of the game so I can tell if Steam is going to conflict with it or not.

But the idea that Valve can just close up shop for whatever reason or whoever's doing, and rob millions and millions of customers of their goods is just ludicrous. Do you have any idea how many lawsuits there would be? People can be lazy, but robbery is one of the few things that tends to get someone's attention to get shit done.
