Random Gaming Thoughts
Re: Random Gaming Thoughts
Just saw a video on Goldeneye for N64. Where did this excitement of getting the game based on the movie/tv show go? Do they still make them? Maybe because games are now ''bigger'' products than movies, so they use games to sell movies and not the other way around. I know there are some mobile games for like Game of Thrones, but these seem to be just a different theme/skin of another game.

Yeah, the sealed game market drives me insane, and the graded market drives me even more insane. If you want to collect something that you can just stare at on a shelf collect toys or stamps or something and get out of this hobby, games are meant to be played, and idiots who try and manipulate the market just annoy the hell out of me. On the plus side, it is hilarious watching morons who bought multiple copies of mario 3d all stars trying to make a buck, now sell them for cheap to recoup some of their costs, is definitely hilarious.RCBH928 wrote:@pook
When I joined this forum part of the attraction to retro games was that you can get awesome games for dirt cheap price, $3-10. My only guess is that as the gamer community grew and we started having "game culture" people who got their hands on this "brand new unopened" game from 20 years ago(still amazes me), they must thought it must be worth a fortune. So they listed it for $50, so the guys who owned a used copy thought "If the brand new one cost $50, then surely a used one can get me $30". People who are looking to buy this game look on ebay and find it listed for $100, must be thinking "This game is worth $100, must be a good investment I can not lose money on it as it gets older". And so it goes. All in all, people selling these games are probably making a good living and doing this on the side. They probably got their hands on these games dirt cheap, they don't need to sell the older it gets the more money it will fetch them. Basically they are hoarding them.
Honestly, you say that games had many prints but IIRC people used to dispose of older technology back then. I didn't know much of kids kept their NES cartridges by the time PS2 was out. On the other hand, how many people out there seek an original SNES cartridge of "WWF RAW"? If people are buying this stuff I think they are doing ti as a hobby like stamp collectors, they are not really in it to play the games. Seriously, did any one play his complete collection of console "x" ?
Agreed on the complete collection of x point as well, there is so much shovelware on every system I couldnt imagine paying money for some of the trash thats out there just to get a complete set of something.

Most people are not good at business. One out of two small businesses will fail in their first 5 years.
And yet unfortunately they can still do damage on their way down.

One of those times I wish I knew programming-
One thing I'd be interested in trying would be to create a "blank layer" over the screen when playing in an emulator, probably using the Retroarch API (or GUI? I don't know the terminology) where it recognizes the ROM/ISO being played and will allow the player to choose to download a translation file. Now, this translation, rather than a hack, is handled by the Retroarch system, with it dropping a hand made translation over the text boxes and UI and such in real time. Of course, I have no idea if that is actually possible, but I swear up and down I've seen something similar to this done before, but it fell out of fashion due to so many of the translations being Google Translate based. I think if we could avoid hacking, and just have people translate as they play like some Youtubers do, we could really make a bigger dent in untranslated games, including ones that have been tried many times and failed to get anywhere.

Reminders of that guy who was hoarding medical supplies trying to profit from the COVID pandemic, later on turns out that there was no shortage of supplies. He was stuck with a storage of face masks and gallons of steriliser. Also scalpers, when was the last time you really couldn't find product you wanted? IIRC that was the Nintendo Wii which was hard to get for some months on launch, and in all honesty I think the reason was not even Nintendo expected to sell that much. Although I do imagine some rich brat that couldn't find a PS5 today at his local Best Buy so he is going to pay $1500 for this eBay one, or some Youtuber that needs to do a review the same day the console launches.pook99 wrote: On the plus side, it is hilarious watching morons who bought multiple copies of mario 3d all stars trying to make a buck, now sell them for cheap to recoup some of their costs, is definitely hilarious.

Is this to be expected at age 7? I mean for them to be able to search online for DOSBOX and apply them? I thought I was something closer to a hacker when I was able to create simple HTML website at age 13-14.BoneSnapDeez wrote:

Re: Random Gaming Thoughts
Looking it up, apparently I was thinking of ZTranslate, which has an option called "packages", which drops the translation over a second screen shown while you play the game. Janky, but it could work, and apparently it is still being worked on by the original creator. I'm still fascinated by the idea. I'd love to do my own translation patches, but the absolute lack of ability I have to extract the script will make that impossible.

There are so many games out there being pumped out, I wonder if creating games became as easy as editing a picture on Photoshop.
