Keeping with the “lets watch all the horror movies we have on DVD but haven’t watched yet” theme, my wife and I watched Doctor X (1932) last night. It’s a pre-code serial killer horror film that, shockingly, was produced in two-tone Technicolor. The rather gruesome story involves the discovery of mutilated, partially eaten bodies and a gambit by the titular Doctor X to draw out the crazed murderer from among his colleagues by recreating the crimes. (The plot’s a little ridiculous, but it’s not so bad if you just go with it.) Because it’s from the 1930s, it features a fast-talking newspaper man, who is really annoying. It also features a pre-King Kong Faye Wray (in color!) ho is not the least bit annoying. Most interestingly, and as mentioned above, the film is shot in two-tone Technicolor, which (1) gives the film a green-and-sepia approximation of true color; and (3) requires the film to be shot at a high frame rate. This effect, coupled withe film’s use of expressionist sets, silent-era framing, and vintage special effects renders certain segments of the film visually stunning. It’s worth watching for these segments alone. Recommended.

I know, right? He was so, so annoying. I get that he’s supposed to be the comic relief, but nothing he says or does in the entire film is remotely funny or witty.

This Criterion Channel lineup of horror stuff might make me take a pass on some of the Universal Monster films that I was hoping to watch. I am also planning a wedding this month (wedding planning is its own kind of horror), so it remains to be seen how much that increases/decreases my horror film watching.

Any good bride/groom/wedding based horror films that folks would recommend?

Second, Honeymoon (2014) is definitely the movie you’re looking for, once you’ve gone through the wedding films:

Ready or Not

I second this recommendation. It's funny, it's gruesome and, I mean, Samara Weaving is literally running around nearly getting killed (or killing others) in her wedding gown. It's hard to get much closer than that.

Other than maybe Corpse Bride.
