SNES is too hard for me to come up with a top 10. Not because I can't narrow it down to 10, but because of two other reasons. One, it's my favorite childhood console and remains my favorite console. There's games that would have made my top 10 as a kid, but don't as an adult. I still really like them, but they're not top 10 anymore. And that's were I have a hard time deciding. Is a game a top 10 because I still really like to play it? Or is it because I have fond memories of it? And the second reason is because my "favorite" seems to change depending what mood I'm in. There's a pool of my favorite games that never changes, but the top 10 can constantly rotate through that pool of games. So I can list a top 10 as I feel right now, but some of those might change next week or month. And games that came off the top 10 might go back on!

1 - Super Mario All-Stars - This is definitely one of my desert island picks. It's not cheating because it's made up of 4 games since it's one release. But yeah, it has 3 solid games and 1 tricky game if I feel like ripping my hair out. It has beautiful 16-bit graphics, and it's some of the best 2D platforming games ever made. I can't tell you the hours I've spent playing my All-Stars cart. I cherished it ever since I picked it up from Funco Land.

2 - Donkey Kong Country 2 - This is definitely one of my all time favorite games. It just got everything right. The graphics and music were awesome and created an amazing atmosphere. The gameplay is solid. It's just a perfect 10 out of 10 in my mind.

3 - Donkey Kong Country 3 - While I can admit that it's just not as good as DKC2, I still love this game. It's a 9 out of 10 for me. There's nothing that I consider to be wrong about this game, it only loses that point because DKC2 is just a little better.

4 - Donkey Kong Country - So the DKC games eat up almost a third of my top 10 list, but so be it. The first DKC is somewhat outdated by it's two sequels, but it's still a solid game. It still has great music and graphics that create an awesome atmosphere. Although some aspects of the gameplay were improved in the sequels, DKC is still has great gameplay.

5 - Super Mario World - It was the pack-in game that I got with my SNES, and I spent many hours getting all 96 exits for the first time. I've played this game so much that I kind of played it out, it'll never captivate me the way it once did, but it continues to be fun to play through nonetheless. It's one of the best 2D platformers in existence.

6 - Super Castlevania IV - One of the best 2D platformers on the SNES and possibly of all time. And if you want to make a sub genera hack-n-slash platformer, this is the best one on the SNES. I might sound like a broken record, but this game has awesome graphics and awesome music that make great atmosphere. It was an earlier SNES game and remained one of the best soundtracks through the console's life. And the gameplay is damn flawless. You could argue if the more fluid movement and extra whip directions compared to other classic Castlevania games is a good or bad thing, but looking at this game on it's own and not comparing it to the rest of the CV games, it's has amazing gameplay.

7 - The Legend of Zelda - A Link to the Past - Zelda didn't appeal to me when I was young, I think my little mind made assumptions about the game without ever playing it. I played LttP for the first time the generation after the SNES and it instantly became one of my favorite SNES games. It's a damn near perfect game. I just recently replayed it, and it's definitely not just nostalgia, this game is still fun to play.

8 - SimCity - As far as realistic simulation goes, this game is massively outdated. But it just has so much damn charm that will always make me smile. I can't tell you how many hours I spent playing this game. This was definitely a top 5 childhood favorite of mine, and I'm not sure if that's the only reason it makes my adult top 10. I do still play it from time to time, but I'm not sure if it's because of nostalgia or if I still like playing the game. I guess it doesn't matter. If a game makes you smile when you play it, does it matter if it's only nostalgia or not?

9 - Star Fox - This is another example of a game that I think only makes my top 10 because of nostalgia. The gameplay is definitely outdated. It might have been impressive at the time, but it really plays like shit (lots of slowdown and pop up). Still, being a Nintendo game, it had a lot of charm. I think that charm is still appealing today, even if the gameplay is kind of weak by today's standards. The graphics were amazing at the time, but haven't aged well. The music is still top notch. The core gameplay is still fun, despite all the slowdown and pop up that you have to deal with. So this might only make my list because of nostalgia, but again, does that matter?

10 - Narrowing it down to just 10 is way to hard for me, so I 'm going to cheat. Here's the games that are all tied for the 10th spot. If I really had to think about it, some of these games might even get an official spot on the list. But like I said in my opening paragraph, my top 10 seems to rotate from time to time. Well, at least the back half will.

Mario Paint - Outdated today because of what you can do on an PC, phone or tablet, but it still has so much of that Nintendo charm. I can't tell you how many hours of this game I played as a kid. So many hours that the buttons wore out on my mouse. Does it only make my favorite list because of nostalgia? Maybe. But despite the fact that we can do these things on a PC or tablet with ease these days, I still think it holds up and is fun to play today.

Mortal Kombat II - Definitely a top 10 or even a top 5 of mine as a kid. MKII remains one of my all time favorite games. The SNES port was the best of the original home console ports. Although there are better ways to play this game today, I find the SNES port to still be playable. So it has to stay on my favorite SNES games list.

Super Mario RPG - Take Squaresoft, who were making the best JRPGs at the time, and Nintendo, who have the most lovable characters and pack so much charm into their games that it oozes from all of the seams, and what do you get? A really good game! I was instantly hooked the first time I played this game.

TMNT4 Turtles in Time - One of the best beat em ups of all time. We all know, I don't have to explain further.

Aladdin - The Genesis Aladdin gets all the praise because Disney helped with the sprites and animation, and I will admit it has the better sprites, but the SNES game has the better gameplay. It's a Capcom 16-bit platformer when Capcom was in their heyday. It's funny how it flew under the radar, and continues to. But if you like 2D platformers, then you should definitely check this one out if you haven't already.

E.V.O Search for Eden - This was one of my childhood favorites, and still remains one of my favorite SNES games.

Hook - This game should probably make my top 10 because of how much I like it, but I'm too lazy to go back and reorder what I already typed. It has beautiful 16-bit graphics and really good music. The physics are definitely different than what you might be use to from Mario, Sonic, or DK. Not bad at all, just different. The gameplay is solid. If you like 2D 16-bit platformers, this is a must play. This game definitely doesn't get as much love as it deserves, so it's a hidden gem that's actually still hidden.

Mega Man 7 - I really wanted this game as a kid but never got it, I only played it as a rental. I eventually got it in the early 2000s, but I suppose 20 years is long enough to have nostalgia for something. It has bright and colorful 16-bit graphics, and that with the soundtrack just makes this such a cheerful game. I was in high school when I first got this game, and while I was playing through it we had a snow day. It's just one of those fond memories that you have, sitting at home on a snow day and playing my new (new to me, at least) game.

Mega Man X - Another game that I didn't have as a kid, but got in the early 2000s. This is a near perfect game. Beautiful 16-bit graphics, an awesome soundtrack, and awesome gameplay. If you couldn't tell by now, that's the trifecta for me. For the sub genre of run and gun 2D platformer, this is probably my favorite on the SNES.

The Ninja Warriors - I have no nostalgia for this game, I only recently discovered it. But it's just such an awesome beat em up for the SNES! Not as good as TMNT4, but there's just something so engaging about it. I love it.

Yoshi's Island - A really solid 2D platformer. A unique graphical style that still looks nice today. A very good soundtrack, every tune has the possibility of getting stuck in your head. And solid gameplay. It is so very annoying when you take a hit and have to get baby Mario back just so he will STOP CRYING! But that and Yoshi's flutter made for some very unique gameplay.

Zombies Ate My Neighbors - This game makes my favorite list probably mostly for nostalgia, but it is still fun to play. I just wish it was a little easier, like passwords after each level and unlimited continues or something.

So there's my favorites. There's plenty of other SNES games that I really, really like. But these are the ones that I really, really, REALLY like. If that make any sense.

Mega Man X, Final Fantasy V, Chrono Trigger, TMNT 4 and and Donkey Kong Country are 5 SNES games I am always down to play deep into. There's a lot of games on the console I love and I have my own Top 10, but these 5 are always special to me.

Okay then.

1. Final Fantasy III (VI) -- My favorite game ever. Just incredible. Great story and mechanics, with one of the most stunning soundtracks to ever grace video games. Does the unthinkable: contains a huge cast of heroes and every single one is memorable.

2. Chrono Trigger -- Basically like a more refined and streamlined Final Fantasy VI. An absolute joy to play. This may have the best pacing of any JRPG ever. Just think of all the different environments visited in the first five hours alone. Lucca best girl.

3. EarthBound -- Rounding out the holy trinity of turn-based SNES RPGs. This is such a whimsical nostalgic experience. The humor has held up extraordinarily well. I'm still stunned by how competently this was written and localized, especially for 1995 standards.

4. Secret of Mana -- There's just something about this one. It's so ethereal. Some of the most gorgeous pixel art ever seen, and Hiroki Kikuta's soundtrack is criminally underrated. The combat remains controversial, though I never had serious issues with it (minus the magic system, which is a bit odd).

5. The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past -- The NES Zelda games were excellent, but could be clunky and tough. This one irons out all those wrinkles and this is where the series reaches perfection. Possibly Koji Kondo's best soundtrack too.

6. Super Mario World -- Pretty much the perfect platformer. Great controls and aesthetics, balanced difficulty, tons of secrets. Somehow infinitely replayable.

7. Donkey Kong Country -- I think the sequels are a bit uneven, and prefer this instead. It basically remixes the Mario template and does so rather successfully. Stunning graphics and music (stating the obvious here) and the two-player co-op mode is fantastic.

8. The Lost Vikings -- Such a slick puzzle platformer. Never gets too obtuse, nor does it overstay its welcome. Still pretty funny in that "radical" 90s way too. Are we still calling this a hidden gem?

9. The 7th Saga -- Certainly an unconventional pick. Surely not an "objectively" good RPG, but one I personally enjoy. It's brutally hard, (too) long, bizarre, and drenched with a melancholy atmosphere that remains unmatched.

10. Kirby Super Star -- A mash-up of mini-games that somehow works. Everything's fun, everything's cute, the unlockable content is awesome. I love Kirby.

This is a tough one for me because there's a lot of games I like but not ones I love and the ones I love are mostly the usual suspects, Super Metroid, Link to the Past, Turtles in Time, Mega Man X, Super Mario World. We all know why those are great. I guess I'll put some of my oddball choices instead.

Assault Suits Valken/Cybernator: Giant robots and even bigger explosions, great level set pieces and purposely clunky controls to simulate that you're operating a mech. The action is intense, the graphics are gorgeous and it's easily the best game of its respective "Assault Suits" franchise. I'd say it's one of the most underrated action games on the console but it's gotten a lot of recognition in the past few years. Metal Warriors apes it while being unique enough to stand on its own and it's a great game too. It's creator also did Front Mission: Gun Hazard which takes its gameplay and adds RPG elements and it's fantastic though I prefer the slick level design and more compact level-based gameplay of Valken.

SimCity: The best version of the original game. It's one of my ultimate chill-out games. Yeah there it's about as deep as a puddle and laughably simplistic compared to the city builders that came later but there's just something so zen about this game, particularly this version of it. And when you get tired of that zen you can summon Bowser.

Macross Scrambled Valkyrie: My favorite shmup on the system based on one of my favorite anime. It's a gorgeous game with some fun gimmicks.

Super Smash TV: Simple, addictive, and easily the best home port of of Smash TV for its era even according to Eugene Jarvis. Even though I suck at this game I can't pop it in and not have fun.

Sunset Riders: This is "usual suspects" territory I guess. I have a lot of nostalgia for this one as it's probably the on I played the most with friends. It's Contra with cowboys, what's not to love?

Here’s my list, in alphabetical order:

Contra III: The Alien Wars
Final Fantasy III (VI)
Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
Lost Vikings
Mega Man X
R-Type III: The Third Lightning
Street Fighter II Turbo: Hyper Fighting
Super Mario Kart
Super Mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island
Super Metroid

No surprises here! What I am getting from this thread, though, is that more of you need to play R-Type III.

I need to give Lost Vikings some more time. I discovered it last year and thought it was awesome, but I only played a few levels and then forgot about it.

It's definitely tough to pick a top 10 for the SNES, but this is the first home console I ever owned when I was young, so it holds a special place for me. It's still one of my favorite consoles to this day. In no particular order ...

1. Super Mario World - This was the pack-in game with my SNES as well, and one of my first experiences on the system. Amazing 2D platformer -- luckily I don't feel like I've totally worn this game out, so I look forward to returning to it again.

2. Street Fighter II: The World Warrior - I know there are so many different ways to play this game and a multitude of better versions now. But when this game was released on home console, it was a moment. This was one of the few games that was a cultural phenomenon IMO, and I'm glad I was a kid at the time to experience it. I still remember the summer day my cousins brought their SNES and new copy of Street Fighter II to my parents apartment. Great times.

3. Legend of the Mystical Ninja - I guess this would be considered an oddball pick, but I received this game on the same Christmas day I got the SNES console, and I really like the art style and gameplay, it's got a variety of level types and a lot of mini-games. It's also fun in co-op. As time has gone on, I've appreciated this game more, and it's definitely a unique experience on the console. Also, the box art is great IMO.

4. Donkey Kong Country - My favorite of the DKC series will always be the first game, as I played it the most by far. The graphics were also something special at the time it was released. This is a game my sister and I still love to pick up and play co-op mode together when we have a chance to hang out. Growing up, my sister owned this game, I didn't get my own cart until just recently.

5. Zelda: A Link to the Past - I got this game about three years after it came out, and it's actually the only "Player's Choice" cart I have. But, I was so glad to finally get this game -- I played it a ton. When I was in college in the mid 2000's, my roommate had a SNES and this game, and we played through it together, which was also an amazing experience. This is still my favorite Zelda game.

6. Lufia II: Rise of the Sinistrals - This was one of the few games for the SNES I purchased randomly on a whim, simply because I thought the box art was awesome. I like the fact that this game has dungeons with puzzles, in a similar manner as Zelda, but also had a turn-based battle system like traditional JRPGs. My friend was also a big fan of the game, and we started a play through of it together. When I was young, I found some of the puzzles to be pretty tough, so I'd like to revisit it again next year, and see how I fair.

7. Super Mario RPG - This is a game I'm including based off pure nostalgia, but I still think this one of the best RPGs on the system, and has held up well. My father took me to get this game at Nobody Beats the Wiz and that same day I went to Game 6 of the 1996 World Series, and saw the New York Yankees win a championship at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx. I spent that morning playing Super Mario RPG and spent the evening watching the hometown team win a championship. One of the best days of my life.

8. ActRaiser - This is one of my favorite platformers and the sim mechanics make it a great and unique experience. The soundtrack is also awesome and is one of my favorites on the system. My cousins' had this game back when it was released and I used to enjoy watching them play it. I didn't get a copy until last year, but I played through the game and it still holds up well.

9. TMNT IV: Turtles In Time - I'm a huge fan of beat 'em ups, and this was probably my favorite one on the SNES. My sister was also a big fan of this game, so it was always great to play co-op with her or one of my friends. The graphics were great for the time, the controls were smooth, and the levels were very memorable. My childhood friend and I were chatting about getting together to hang and play this game sometime soon. Can't wait.

10. Super Double Dragon - I know the JP version is considered much better, as a lot was left out of the US release, but this is also a nostalgia pick for me, as I picked this game as a birthday gift in January of 1993 at a Software Etc. This was a popular game amongst my friends at the time, and we spent a lot of time playing in co-op mode. I like the blocking mechanic a lot too. I also really love the soundtrack to this game, especially the music to the level when you're on top of the moving truck.

Other games I really like that should be on the list: Super Smash TV, Contra III: The Alien Wars, Final Fantasy III, Super Metroid, Chrono Trigger, Ninja Warriors, Earthbound, Yoshi's Island, Super Mario All-Stars, Out of This World.

Also, prfsnl_gmr, I really want to play R-Type III, and it's on my grails list!
